What color do you paint your baseboards and crown molding if you have dark floors? The following question and answer will give you your options.
Q. If I have dark wood floors I assume my base boards should also be dark. Is this correct. Also, if I paint my baseboard dark, what color should I paint my trim and crown molding?
A. Sure, you can have your baseboards the same color as the dark floor. This is perfectly acceptable. You can also take that dark color into the trim and crown molding, but you are them limiting your wall colors as the room will be dark if you don’t stick to white colors. This can also be a little dated if not done with the right combination of colors.
Dark wood floors actually look more striking against a crisp white baseboard. This gives the room a very contemporary and modern feel. Also, you are less limited in choices of wall color because you can put almost any color against white trim.
As shown in the accompanying photos, you will see how striking dark floors look with white trim. You will also see that this combination also looks great with dark walls and lighter walls.
Additionally, I have seen some interesting combinations lately using mid tone colors on the trim and baseboard with the walls a slightly lighter color. For instance, I have seen dark coffee colored floors, with coffee and cream colored trim, and buff (beige) wall colors. Basically the floors are dark, the trim is a few shades lighter, and the walls, are a few shades lighter than the trim. This comes out to a subtle, relaxing look.
In summation, if you want a striking modern contemporary room, go put white trim on the baseboards and crown molding of your room with dark wood floors. If you want a casual, country, or other relaxes style, darker trim will work on your baseboards and crown molding, as long as you choose a lighter color for your walls.
