What does a girly-girl do when she doesn’t want the typical flower themed bedroom? A Hollywood themed Marilyn Monroe bedroom might fit the bill. Here are some ideas you can use.
Q. I am a teen-aged girl and want a girly bedroom, but I don’t want the typical flowers and frills that all of my friends have. I was thinking about creating a Marilyn Monroe theme or something from old Hollywood. Do you have any ideas?
A. A Marilyn Monroe bedroom would embody the elegance of old Hollywood and is a perfect theme for a young lady looking for something original. To create a Marilyn Monroe room, you should visit your local thrift stores looking for vintage items from them the 1950’s to 1960’s. Look for ceramic cups and bowls, and perhaps a star burst mirror to add that vintage touch to your room.
Before we get carried away with accessories, let’s start with the basics. Choose a bright sunny wall color in the light blue, pink, or yellow family. Paint with a sheen will help dress up the room even more. Find matching sheer curtains for the window, and use a similar fabric for the bed dust ruffle. Find a half circle canopy for the head of the bed, and also drape that in sheer fabric.
As for the bed itself, you have two options. You can get an authentic iron headboard that is indicative of the time period, or you can create a fabric covered tufted headboard for a hint of luxury. Other furniture in the room should be clean lined, and not too fancy. Think Shaker, Mission, or Arts and Crafts style. A vintage velvet upholstered round back chair would be a nice touch.
For bed covers, look for soft velvet and chenille, or perhaps satin bedspreads and blankets. You may want to get an extra soft shag carpet area rug to put at the foot of your bed.
Don’t forget to set up a glamorous dressing table with a well-lit mirror for doing your hair and makeup. Display your antique bowls and vases on this table.
Finally, get a couple of framed images of Marilyn Monroe and hang them on the wall. The photos should be black and white, and placed in a simple black frame with white mat board. It might be fun to stencil a scrolled frames on the wall around your Marilyn Monroe pictures.
