When you are interested in obtaining a Delaware CDL (Commercial Driver’s License), you must meet all of the eligibility requirements set forth by the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles. It is important to not only review the following information, but also read the entire Delaware Commercial Driver’s License Manual to review current information and guidelines.
Delaware CDL Requirements:
To apply for a Delaware CDL, you must be at least 18 years old with one year of driving experience. Those who are aged 18 to 20 are able to obtain a CDL, but they cannot drive on interstates outside of Delaware or carry passengers. Those who are 21 years old or older who have at least one year of driving experience are also eligible for a Delaware CDL. Also, all Delaware CDL applicants must be Delaware residents.
Along with meeting the age and resident requirements, applicants must complete the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Requirement medical certificate, which can be found in the Resources section below. This medical examination report must be completed by a licensed physician, and based on the information found within this examination an applicant may either be denied a CDL or have CDL restrictions.
Delaware CDL Instruction Permit:
After you have met the aforementioned requirements, you can then visit any local Delaware DMV office and fill out the CDL License Application form. This form requires basic information, as well as a your driving history and you may also be subjected to a drug screening test.
Once you have filed the appropriate application, you will then need to schedule a knowledge test. Every Delaware CDL applicant is required to take the general knowledge examination; however, depending on the CDL Class and required endorsements you may be required to take additional knowledge examinations. The Delaware CDL Manual covers all the additional tests you may be required to take. After passing the required knowledge exam(s), you must then pay a $30 licensing fee and a Delaware CDL Instruction Permit will be awarded to you.
This Delaware CDL Instruction Permit is valid for six months, and with it you can drive a specific type of vehicle you’re licensed for with another Delaware CDL licensed driver. After you feel you’re ready for the skills test, you must then contact Delaware DMV office where you took the knowledge examinations to schedule a skills test. This test is comprised of three parts: Basic Control Skills, Pre-Trip Inspection and a On Road Driving test. After you have passed the Delaware CDL Skills Exam, you will be awarded an official Delaware CDL.
