The Dexter Season 5 premiere countdown has been fairly long. In fact, Dexter Season 5 premiere questions sprung immediately after the Season 4 finale, since few could imagine where the show would go from here. With perhaps the most shocking final scene of the TV year last December, the saga of a vigilante serial killer took its greatest risk to date. Now it has to start paying off, as the Showtime hit reaches uncharted territory under new hands. Yet tonight’s premiere, along with the next two weeks, are said to pay off that promise.
Warning: Spoilers follow
The show had a creative resurgence last year with the arrival of John Lithgow as a killer even more prolific than Dexter Morgan. But the heroic murderer took too long to finish off the evil one, and by the time he ended the Trinity Killer’s reign, wife Rita was already laying dead in a bathtub of blood.
The season premiere literally picks up seconds after Dexter’s discovery, as he is hit with the unfamiliar feeling of guilt. Knowing that Rita died for his mistakes, he makes a slip of the tongue that puts him under suspicion – especially in the eyes of his sister’s partner. But while dealing with Rita’s kids, the police investigation, and his own remorse, he still has to go on slaying the wicked.
After the unexpected twist to end last year, it left fans wondering for nine months what could happen next. Since the premiere starts under a new show runner, after Clyde Phillips left, the mystery is even deeper. Given the raves and awards for Season 4, and the harsh new obstacles for the title character, the bar has been set very high.
Critics got to see the first three episodes, and judging by their word, the season premiere keeps the momentum going. To keep it up, the rest of the year will have guest appearances from the likes of Julia Stiles, Jonny Lee Miller, and Peter Weller. But since Lithgow and Trinity set the standards too high last year, there is said to be no “Big Bad” killer for Dexter to face this season.
Instead, it seems his biggest foes will be a collection of figures, and his own new feelings. Although fans were mixed about Dexter becoming a family man last season, the payoff ultimately silenced those critics. Now that Rita isn’t around to drag him down – or keep him stable – there’s no safety net for where he can go.
Starting with the premiere, an already risky show is about to up the ante. But the series has overcome big risks before, especially in making a serial killer into a TV anti-hero in the first place. Killing the female lead seems like playing it safe by comparison.
Although Sunday nights are already crowded on cable, the Dexter Season 5 premiere stands to be a big event. Showtime gets the blood racing – and spilling – again at 9 pm est.
