Traditionally, coats are considered longer overcoats, while jackets are specific options used as short undercoats. Although it can also be worn out of necessity, there are cases that wearing a jacket becomes more of an accessory or as part of a fashionable look. For a coat, it is always more likely worn out of necessity.
In modern use, coats are generally worn for casual meetings and as part of the informal everyday wear with or without matching pants or trousers, while jackets are generally used for formal occasions and are always worn with matching pants or trousers. However, the casual or formal use of coats and jackets is also dependent on the design and type of materials they are made of.
Jackets are ideally shorter than coats. A jacket usually reaches up to the waist or hip area, while coats can go longer within the knee area or even the ankle. A jacket can go three quarter length while a coat is classified as full length.
By definition, a coat is a long item of clothing worn by male or female. The functionality of the garment would be for additional warmth but it had been a part of fashion especially during the early nineteenth century.
Materials and Design
While each one varies according to many factors such as material used, stitching style, button sizes and shapes, color and overall cut, a coat is ideally made of thicker material. It is also heavier and made of more durable fabrics. Some may use tweeds, twills, sheepskin, leather, synthetic, or other thick materials.
During winter, a jacket can be worn under a coat. There are also variations such as using different types of fur or any other thick material for the collar or cuffs. There are also those patterned like the early version of the camouflage.
Depending on the material used, most coats also require a special cleaning process, unlike most jackets that can possibly be included in the regular laundry. When worn, most jackets are also tighter than coats. Meanwhile, coats are generally warmer than jackets.
