On episode #276 of Diggnation, show host Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht announced that the hugely popular video podcast would not be cancelled at the end of the year, it would just be revised.
Diggnation covers some of the hottest user-submitted stories on the social bookmarking website Digg.com. Co-founder and Diggnation show host, Kevin Rose, founded the site back in 2004 and started the webcast shortly afterward with friend and former Screen Savers show host Alex Albrecht by his side. The show features Kevin and Alex drinking a lot of beer either on their couches or out in public as they talk about the stories that have reached the front page of Digg.com.
The hilarious duo shocked the show’s estimated 200,000 fans back in June by announcing on This Week in Tech that the show would be cancelled at the end of 2010. Fans went into outraged and were quickly reminded of the pang of loss over TechTV in 2004. Fans were also surprised to learn that it was not because of liver cancer after five years of alcohol consumption on the show.
“Kevin’s tea drinking habit probably saved him, but I don’t know how Alex has survived this long.” Matthew Austin of ElisaAshley.com said, “Maybe it’s just because he’s an asshole.” Whatever the case may be, fans should be relieved that it is not going to happen.
In episode #276, Kevin and Alex announced that they would not be cancelling the web show, but they do want to rebrand it and do things with the show other than sit around and talk about Digg.com. They voiced their wish to do more live shows which is amazing in that they do about one live show a month now. Kevin and Alex are also asking for suggestions from the viewing audience about which direction the show should go. You can send your suggestions to email@example.com.
What amazes me about this story is the fact that Kevin Rose himself started the rumor. In a live video interview on This Week in Tech, Kevin told Leo Laporte that he and Alex were “tired of traveling”. He said that they would continue the web show until the end of the year but then scale it back to only live shows about once every quarter. Wow! This is completely opposite to what they said on Diggnation. It makes you wonder if they even know what they want to do. Of course, you need to consider that Kevin’s interview with Leo was done sober and the Diggnation webcast is always done while under the influence. I guess fans of Diggnation will just have to wait it out and see what’s to come of the show in the months ahead.
