Summit Entertainment has decided to leave fans in bated breath waiting for the Twilight Saga‘s final big screen debut. The first installment of Breaking Dawn is slated to be released on November 18th, 2011. A full year later twi-hards will finally see the ending to the phenomenon on November 16th, 2012. Giving them a few weeks to ponder over the conclusion before the end of the world. Why has Summit decided to stretch the franchise out as long as they can? If you look at the numbers, one can only assume it was a financial decision. It appears that the June release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse may have been a disappointment to the studio’s number crunchers. The obvious intention was to let young fans have the opportunity to see the film multiple times during summer break. Surprisingly, the third film has only grossed $288.1 million domestically so far.
This is shy of New Moon‘s domestic total earnings of $296 million. Eclipse was much more successful critically so the obvious downfall seemed to be timing. The low numbers may be due to Eclipse having to share the spotlight with other summer blockbusters like The Last Airbender. Summit Entertainment may now be wondering if a Fall release would have provided a better pay day. Luckily, the Eclipse DVD should be arriving in stores before the Christmas rush, which will be a great advantage for Summit.
For the past few months there has been a lull in the Twilight community, there is not much to report on or discuss as no films are in theatres and none are being filmed. Fans will be happy to hear that the actors, including Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner are beginning preparations in October. Filming will take place between November 1st and March 15th. Some of the wolf pack already appear to be training, based on the tweet by Chaske Spencer. Melissa Rosenburg is diligently working on the screenplay. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter she says there is a natural break in the book, which will separate part one and part two,”I think it comes down to Bella as human and Bella as vampire”. This gives fans an insight to how the two movies will flow. The first will be a more uplifting glimpse into the newlywed life of a vampire and a mortal whereas part two will tackle the more controversial topics such as abortion.
