This is week six and the colonists are not safe in their surroundings. Last week Becka was returned for a high ransom from her captors. It cost the colony gasoline, medical supplies and much needed food.
The colonists awake to find their water source contaminated with fish floating on the surface. It smells like raw sewage and is oily. Up until now, they have been boiling their water and are down to a four day supply. Their next project is to find water. Their temporary solution is to build a cistern to catch water that drains off from the rain. They hammer every nail in a large dumpster sized container and line it with thick plastic that was on a tent.
On the night watch, Michael is the security officer and stays awake most of the night. During the night on Michael’s watch, they are invaded by outsiders who awaken the rest of the colony. Michael is sorry and apologizes, but they are now sure that they need more leadership. Up until now, Sian has been the mother figure or quasi leader.
It starts to rain, but not enough for now. They plan to leave the compound and use the tractor, a scavenged motorcycle and build a vehicle that will allow a few people to ride together to look for a safer area. Because they did not get enough rain, they head over to an abandoned pool that still has some water in it to check and see if it can be potable. Lo and behold, they find an alligator in the pool that immediately becomes dinner.
While everyone is excited about the alligator, Reno is sitting watch in the house that was invaded just last night. He is annoyed that everyone is so obsessed with food and completely forgot about security. They decide over alligator dinner that there needs to be a vote to elect someone the supreme leader who will be responsible for all decisions. They decide to have a secret ballot and Sally the mechanic wins the vote.
As three of them take off on the vehicle that they built, they travel quite a distance but do not find anyone. They come upon an abandoned fast food joint that is infested with cockroaches. They know that the roaches can be eaten, so they start to collect them to take back to the colony. They also find a fry-o-lator filled with oil that they can use for fuel and a large poster sized macaroni art picture that kids made for their father. Jim is overcome with emotion when he sees the names on the picture; the same names of his kids.
As the tractor returns someone is spying on the colonists as they return with all their good finds but nothing happens and that night it rains and the heavens open up and fill their cistern with about four hundred gallons of water that they managed to gather thanks to their ingenuity. But who was spying on them?
