Dissidia: Final Fantasy was a hit game featuring many of the Final Fantasy series’ most popular characters. However, the game was limited to at most one hero and villain from each Final Fantasy game. In most cases, the main protagonist/villain of the story was selected for inclusion instead of some of the more popular characters. During the announcement for the sequel, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy (pronounced Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy, duodecim is Latin for twelve) a few new characters were announced for the game. The following is a wish list for new characters to be added to the game. WARNING: Descriptions below may contain spoilers for the original Final Fantasy games.
Xande, Final Fantasy III
When Cloud of Darkness was announced as a character in Dissidia, I think many Final Fantasy fans were confused. Cloud of Darkness made an appearance at the end of Final Fantasy III, and there was no hint of Cloud of Darkness being involved in the story in anyway until the very end. It seems only fitting that we add Xande, the real main antagonist of Final Fantasy III, to the villain lineup.
Kain Highwind, Final Fantasy IV
(Confirmed for Dissidia 012)
Kain Highwind is one of the most popular characters from Final Fantasy IV. Not only was he the introduction to a Dragoon class in North America, players identified with him for his betrayal and later attempted redemption in the main storyline. The addition of Kain Highwind also gives us a Dragoon class member for Dissidia 012.
Tifa Lockhart, Final Fantasy VII
(Confirmed for Dissidia 012)
Tifa is not just one of the most popular female characters in Final Fantasy, she’s one of the most popular female characters in video game history. She’s loved for her toughness in hand to hand combat, a caring attitude, and her sex appeal. She’s a stark contrast to earlier female characters like Rosa, Rydia, and Terra who were mages or summoners. Tifa also adds some contrast to the Dissidia character lineup by giving us a hand to hand combat fighter.
Vincent Valentine, Final Fantasy VII
We don’t have any gun toting protagonists on this list yet. We’ll go with the secretive Vincent Valentine over Barret Wallace. He’s one of the more popular characters from Final Fantasy VII and was popular enough to star in his own spinoff game Dirge of Cerberus.
Red XIII, Final Fantasy VII
Red XIII isn’t amongst Final Fantasy VII’s more popular characters. However, he’s one of the few non-human (or non-humanesque) characters in the Final Fantasy games, so he’ll be another good contrasting addition to the character lineup. If the Marvel vs Capcom 3 can add Amaterasu, I’m sure Square Enix can add Red XIII to Dissidia 012.
Reno, Final Fantasy VII
The Turks were amongst the most popular groups of baddies in the Final Fantasy universe, so it’s only fitting we add their most popular member to the villain lineup. Reno’s baton will also be a nice contrast to all the swords in the game. Before someone asks, yes, we’re adding more characters from Final Fantasy VII than any other game. It’s only fitting given it’s probably the most popular game from the series.
Selphie, Final Fantasy VIII
Selphie was the lovable yet clumsy girl next door in Final Fantasy VIII. She isn’t as loved as much as Tifa above or possibly even Rinoa from the same game, however there’s one key reason I’m saying Selphie should be added. There are way too many characters with swords in Dissidia. Selphie and her nunchunks would be a fun addition.
Vivi Orunitia, Final Fantasy IX
I don’t know what needs to be said about Vivi. He’s easily the most popular character from Final Fantasy IX’s main party and amongst the most popular characters in the Final Fantasy universe. His classic black mage design, childlike personality, and self discovery in Final Fantasy IX’s storyline have made him an absolute favorite.
Yuna, Final Fantasy X
Despite all of the summoners in Final Fantasy history, none of them made it into Dissidia. It’d be a lot of fun to add a summoner and their abilities to the character lineup. We’ll go with Yuna over Rydia (Final Fantasy IV) and Garnet (Final Fantasy IX).
Auron, Final Fantasy X
Another one of the more popular characters in Final Fantasy X, I originally didn’t want to add Auron to the lineup. However, I later realized Dissidia didn’t have many “tank” characters in the protagonist lineup, as most main characters are more general characters created to help the player identify with them.
Seymour Guado, Final Fantasy X
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one, but it felt weird having Jecht as the villain from Final Fantasy X in Dissidia. While he was spiritually a part of Sin, he didn’t feel like the real villain. If any villain was deserving of being in Dissidia, it was really Seymour Guado, the man who tried to force Yuna to marry him.
Balthier, Final Fantasy XII
Gabranth was in Dissidia, so it would seem fitting we add his twin brother Basch to the protagonist lineup too. However, we’ve already added a tank character in Auron from Final Fantasy X. Instead we’ll add the far more popular sky pirate Balthier. The quipster from Final Fantasy XII would be an entertaining addition to the protagonist lineup.
Lightning, Final Fantasy XIII
(Confirmed for Dissidia 012)
Final Fantasy XIII was released after the first Dissidia game, therefore there weren’t any Final Fantasy XIII characters in the game. We’ll start by adding Lightning, the main protagonist from the game. Her addition gives us yet another woman for the cast to help us balance out the roster.
Barthandelus/Galenth Dysley, Final Fantasy XIII
We need a villain from Final Fantasy XIII and the fal’Cie Barthandelus is the perfect fit. Under the guise of Primarch Dysley, his intention was to destroy Cocoon from the beginning.
Ramza and Delita, Final Fantasy Tactics
Ahh, the surprise additions. Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the best strategy RPGs ever created, but many fans seem to forget that it’s a part of the Final Fantasy universe and in the same world as Final Fantasy XII. Ramza and Delita are the key figures in the original Final Fantasy Tactics, so they both seem fitting for inclusion in Dissidia 012.
