These decorative DIY Santa Christmas pins or ornaments make the perfect gifts to give to friends, teachers, neighbors, and others in your life to let them know you’re thinking of them during the holidays. You don’t even have to be an experienced painter to create these cute DIY Santa Christmas pins or ornaments!
This heart Santa is a design that you can paint on any size heart. You can paint a small pin like this one or a larger ornament for your tree. I used a small wooden two inch primitive heart for this DIY Santa Christmas pin. You will need acrylic paints in flesh tone, red, white, and black.
Step 1: Paint a small oval with flesh tone acrylic paint for Santa’s face about one inch from the heart’s pointed end. When dry, add a smudge of red for Santa’s cheeks and a red dot for his mouth.
Step 2: Paint Santa’s boots with black acrylic paint at the bottom of the heart.
Step 3: Paint the rest of the heart with red acrylic paint. When dry, paint Santa’s arms with black acrylic lines. Also, paint a black line between legs. Shade with black to add dimension to your DIY Santa Christmas pin.
Step 4: Paint Santa’s hands with small circles of flesh tone acrylic paint. When dry, add beard, cuffs on Santa’s sleeves, pants, and hat with white acrylic paint. Paint them by pouncing a round brush so it adds texture to them.
Step 5: Paint two dots of black for Santa’s eyes. A toothpick or the pointed end of a paint brush works well for dots. Santa’s nose is outlined with a fine line of black acrylic paint. A permanent marker can also be used for line work if you aren’t confident about using a liner brush. Paint a moustache and eyebrows with white acrylic paint. Santa’s face is done.
Step 6: To give Santa an antiqued look, lightly rub wood stain or even brown acrylic paint over the whole pin.
Step 7: Use slightly watered-down white acrylic paint for snow. Dip an old toothbrush into the white acrylic and lightly run a finger across it. Practice this technique before adding ‘snow’ to your DIY Santa Christmas pin.
Step 8: Stain the edge and back of the DIY Santa Christmas pin to finish the wood. When dry, glue on a pin back using a strong glue like Bond 527 multi-purpose cement.
To make a larger Santa Christmas ornament, use the same directions and just adjust the details to the size of heart that you use. Drill a hole in the point of the heart. Add a ribbon or twine to hang and you have an adorable ornament to give as Christmas gifts.
These Santa Christmas pins or ornaments are sure to make your friends and family happy this holiday.
