Novak Djokovic upset Roger Federer 5-7, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, to reach the finals of the US Open for the first time.
The win put a damper on the crowd’s anticipation of a Federer-Nadal showdown, but the match provided the highest level of play to been seen during the entire tournament. With Djokovic serving at 4-5, and down 15-40, he stunned Federer by hitting a swinging volley winner on the first match point. He followed that up by belting a forehand winner that hit the line on the second match point. With the game at deuce, Djokovic hit a drop shot that brought Federer to the net, and then drilled another screaming forehand winner. After Djokovic held serve, he broke Federer and went on to win the match. Upon watching Federer’s forehand land wide on match point, Djokovic’s eyes looked like they were about to burst from his head.
Roger Federer had appeared in the last six US Open finals.
