We all have value systems that we mostly live by. Generally, they are set by society in general, with some setting a higher standard to satisfy own conscience. Strong basics help us weather many storms throughout our lives. Whatever our position in life, which can also change overnight, we have to adhere to basic values of justice & fair play.
But it is not always easy to live by fair play & justice, as we can find ourselves played-out by circumstances beyond our control & with even the need to forsake a few cherished values to get even, or just to survive! The poor sticks to their basics, while the rich have flexible ones to suit the circumstances, justifying them as being practical to survive and prosper in a harsh world! Whoever it might be, to break the basic values will lead to soul-searching & feeling guilty!
Even countries change their policies to suit circumstances. The 9/11 episode altered the whole security scenario, with harsh rules set against some; not all are treated fairly anyway, and with many explanations to suit such practices! The world is not for the faint-hearted and those who look for justice at every corner. One who can accept things as they are will be less disappointed. It is a struggle for individuals and countries to survive in a dog-eat-dog world, where only the nimble can stay in the game with even pliable values & principles, sadly!
In our lives, our conscience can be our master to enjoy a contended life, to accept our position in life, but still try to change what we can. We learn new lessons all along, but the basics of life should stand us in good stead. But brutal set-backs can make anyone to lose the bearings and question our own stand on basic issues. Living within our means was a golden principle to live by, but now some feel printing money out of trouble is not a bad idea, especially if it can be stuffed into the hands of the man in the street to make him spend more! That can change the value of even the most stubborn!
The stoical man in the street is always the back-bone of society everywhere, who can take great reverses but still keep smiling. Behind such smiles, he would have endured betrayal galore; having the values taught in childhood so lovingly coming unstuck in a harsh world where some get ahead, with fair means or foul. He stands by his principles hoping that rule of law will take its course & the basics of fair play will prevail in the end. Of course, some are short-changed forever, but for our creation to have meaning, justice should be served at some point of time, even by a higher authority!
Countries are also finding themselves at the wrong end of justice; the weaker ones are always at the mercy of the powerful. The global system does not treat all as equal! They also rely on others for fair-play & justice. When elephants fight, better for others to stay away! Generally, real elephants avoid fights but for countries, the threat is always in the air – after all, leaders are human!
If we stick by universally accepted norms of behavior, based on fair play & justice, the world will be a much better place. It is time the leaders learnt from the lives of the ordinary man, who lives his life based on those principles despite the odds stacked against him, and willing to adjust his lifestyle but not forsake the principles that guided him in better times. Many promises are broken but not his heart & the indomitable spirit, right to the very end. Our history is replete with the stories of the heroes but the greatest hero is always the ordinary man in the street, who lives more for others! His basic values are unshaken, whatever the provocation! Let his tribe increase manifold & his test of character be a beacon for others, especially for the rich & our leaders!
