We all have chewed gum at some point in time and have all accidentally swallowed it. We all also have heard that gum stays in our stomachs for 7 years after swallowing it as well. The truth is this fact is simply a myth. Gum does not stay in our stomachs for 7 years after swallowing it because our stomachs are filled with acid that will break the gum right down.
However, some gums are made with soft plastics and unnatural ingredients. These types of gums can not be broken down at all. Instead they are simply pushed out of our body’s as waste and come out almost the same way we swallowed them. Gums made with natural ingredients are able to dissolve instantly in stomach acid and do not stay in the stomach for long at all and are passed out through out bodies within 3 days just like food would such as an apple or a carrot.
The reason why people believe gum will stay in your stomach for 7 years after swallowing it is because gum usually contains a component in it that is a natural or unnatural gum base that can not be broken down by saliva alone. We all know saliva is what helps us break down the foods we put in our mouths in eat so they can easily be digestive in our stomachs, but saliva simply can not break down gum at all. Gum has to enter the stomach in order it for it to get broken down at all. This means it is impossible for gum to stay in our stomachs at all whether it is natural or unnatural. If the gum doesn’t break down in our stomachs because it is made from unnatural ingredients it actually passes right out of our bodies the same way it went in.
So the next time you are chewing your favorite flavored gum and accidentally swallow it, or swallow it on purpose you don’t need to fear because it wont stay in your stomach for 7 years. That being said I wouldn’t recommend just swallowing your gum whenever you please or simply can not find a trash to spit it out in because it could upset your tummy a bit and slow down your normal digestive tract, but it will not stay in your stomach for 7 years let alone more than 3 days.
