Pockets of vestiges of history, mostly the bitter ones, are passed on from generation to generation, but the young tend to look ahead or rather at the screens in unison, with rapt attention! As long as they have the latest of everything, it looks to be a good day for them! In fact, the latest & the glitziest hold the same attraction, wherever they are; from China to India to America! Why revisit the past & revive the old wounds; let the sleeping dogs lie. A good take if the past mistakes are avoided, as history repeats itself.
Apart from some festering wounds & injustice, the young do not like to carry much baggage from the past. The still recent World War II is too far back in history for them! Of course, raw nerves are touched, sometimes, by disputes left unresolved like the recent China-Japan spat over Chinese trawler collision with Japanese Coast Guard ships. China flexing its muscles, making the world known how much they matter to others; they have the monopoly of rare earth minerals that are critical for the manufacture of electronic gadgets, to batteries for electric cars. That sent shivers down some spine; a stark reminder to the rest, how much they are beholden to China! Luckily, it was saber-rattling; once the point is made, life is back to normal; but still a jolt to remember well, indeed! Lesson learned, but soon for gotten; do others have a choice, anyway!
Some countries have plugged into the world after undergoing turmoil and great sacrifice in their fight for freedom. China is in the apex now, but just thirty years ago, it was under the Mao spell; a closed-door policy, with internal struggles that cost them millions in lost lives, and lost years. Lessons well learned, never to revisit such pasts of self-destruction. They were also brutalized by Japan in the world war but business-wise, they are now happy with each other; a lesson for others, who just cannot step out of the shadow of the past! Vietnam is also coming out of communism, with market economy playing a bigger role and unleashing the pent-up energy to forge ahead. Cambodia suffered worst under own Pol Pot; still trying to find meaning to the sufferings that killed quarter of their population! India had to fight a long battle to get freedom, but some among the young feel they would have got it without much fight, just as a matter of right! Indonesia also had to fight for freedom, with resultant suffering.
The young do not have much time brooding over history and they are one, in enjoying the present. I come across the youth from Asian countries and one can never make out where they are from through their appearance and manners. They dress the same, and have the same interests, too! Why dwell on the past, which is history anyway; look ahead to the latest of everything that catches the fancy as one! No more restricted by narrow national boundaries; when they can fly across the world, if they have the drive & the money!
In a way, this turn of events can unite people & even make wars irrelevant! But danger always lurks in places we hardly associate it with! One maniacal tyrant can turn the tide, touch the raw nerves and reopen old wounds; like volcanoes, dormant for years, coming back into life! Human nature is such emotions can be driven to frenzy, and with weapons of mass destructions around, doomsday can never be far off! It is for us to marshal our resources to make peace enduring, not harp on injustices of the past, to keep the wounds festering. The preoccupation of the youth across the world with the present is good tidings to unite them. Their energies should be channeled away from destruction; as we see in some places, where they are easy fodder for the manipulators to achieve their ends. We cannot alter history, though some do to suit them to get to power! But the lessons are bitter enough, and with modern weapons, we just have to avoid wars at any cost, just to stay alive! If wars are no-win even for the supposed victors, then they can become history itself; though some, with itchy fingers, would want to end it all, as they cannot enjoy peace, they suffer when others want peace!
