Lately, Michael Vick has been playing football as a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, even though he was convicted of running a dog fighting operation. Throughout his legal troubles, he lost many fans and several endorsements. He was a spokesperson for Nike, Coca-Cola, PowerAde, and many others before the dog-fighting investigation began. However, does his punishment fit the crime he is charged with or did he get an insignificant punishment because he is a celebrity?
Personally, I wish we could ask the dogs what they felt about his dog fighting business. I wonder if they are proud that he is able to play football again after his betrayal to them. These dogs were forced to fight or be killed by another dog, which was a barbaric yet horrendous act. In my opinion, he shouldn’t be playing football and receiving “awards from his teammates.” Instead, he should be made to financially and physically care for every dog that he brutalized and maimed.
Michael Vick betrayed the beautiful yet helpless dogs that depended on him to love and protect them for harm. However, he chose to make money and profit off brutalizing these defenseless dogs on a daily basis. The dog couldn’t say no to the abuse, so they had to fight while people cheered but did nothing to help whenever they were losing. He tortured these animals and he should take responsibility for his actions.
Only a handful of these dogs could be rehabilitated by rescue groups and placed into loving homes, but many were so vicious that they had to be euthanized by a Veterinarian. Are these dogs allowed to ask for justice for the torture that they endured or are they just voiceless victims? Did Michael Vick allow the dogs to beg for mercy and make a deal to spare their life? Why did he believe that his financial gain was worth torturing and abusing these dogs?
In addition, I think he should be forced to fight for his own life, while a crowd stands by and does nothing to help. Honestly, I think he deserves a harsher punishment, but he is free and is trying to repair his damaged reputation. Yet, I feel angry that these dogs never got a chance just to be cuddled or loved by Michael Vick. Furthermore, they never were able to be pets; instead they were used and abused by someone who should have known better.
