Couples who have completed their family, or those who choose not to have children, will need to consider their long term family planning options so that they can use a method of birth control that is right for them. Some couples choose non-surgical forms of artificial birth control such as the use of condoms, the Depo Provera contraceptive injection, birth control pills or other convenient methods that best suit their lifestyle. If you are a TRICARE beneficiary, does TRICARE cover the cost of contraception? What methods does TRICARE not cover?
Birth Control Methods TRICARE Does Cover
TRICARE covers FDA-approved implantable prescription contraceptives, prescription contraceptives, contraceptive diaphragms (including measurement and replacement), and permanent methods of birth control such as vasectomies and tubal ligation (“tubes tied”) for couples who are sure they do not want to add to their family, or ever have children.
According to TRICARE, both male and female sterilisation surgeries are covered, provided the surgeries are carried out as independent procedures. Sterilisation candidates will be counselled on their decision before they are allowed to go ahead with a tubal ligation or vasectomy.
Birth Control Methods TRICARE Does Not Cover
TRICARE offers a wide range of coverage, but it is important to remember that TRICARE is not all-inclusive in its coverage options. TRICARE does not cover the cost of certain artificial methods of birth control such as condoms, or spermicidal foams, jellies and sprays that do not require a prescription.
TRICARE also does not cover the cost of male and female reversal of sterilisation, which is why you must be absolutely sure of your decision before you submit to sterilisation.
TRICARE beneficiaries are entitled to free coverage of certain artificial forms of birth control such as the Depo Provera contraceptive injection, FDA-approved implantable prescription contraceptives, prescription birth control pills, contraceptive diaphragms,. Female (tubal ligation) and male (vasectomy) sterilisation is also covered by TRICARE. However, TRICARE does not cover the cost of sterilisation reversal. If you wish to discuss your contraception options with your Primary Card Manager, make an appointment to see which forms of birth control would work well for you and your spouse.
