New TRICARE beneficiaries may be wondering at the range of services offered by TRICARE Standard/Extra. Does TRICARE Standard/Extra cover preventative services?
TRICARE Standard/Extra covers a range of women’s examinations, such as breast cancer and mammograms. Women who are 40 years of age or older are offered annual physical examinations. Younger women who are considered at high risk of developing breast cancer may also be offered physical examinations.
Pelvic Examinations/Cervical Smear Tests
Pelvic examinations are covered by TRICARE Standard/Extra, along with cervical smear tests, which usually begin annually at the age of 18, or sooner if patients are already sexually active. Once a patient has received three consecutive normal smear tests, they will not need to have a cervical smear test for another three years, unless their doctor recommends otherwise.
Children’s examinations such as school physicals for children aged 5-11 are offered, in conjunction with school registration requirements. However, annual sports physicals are not covered by TRICARE.
Hearing examinations are offered under the well-child care for children up to the age of six. Hearing examinations are not routinely offered to older children or to adults.
Prostate Cancer Examinations
Men aged 40-49 with a history of prostate cancer are covered by TRICARE Standard/Extra. Routine prostate cancer examinations are offered to men over the age of 50. If you are a man who had a vasectomy at least 20 years ago over the age of 40, you are also covered by TRICARE Standard/Extra for a prostate cancer examination.
Cholesterol examinations are routinely offered once every five years for individuals, starting at age 18.
Colorectal Cancer Examinations
Colorectal cancer examinations are covered for individuals who are aged 40 or above. According to TRICARE, individuals aged 50 or above will be offered a colonoscopy every 10 years or every two years beginning at age 25 (or five years younger than the earliest age of diagnosis of colorectal cancer) for individuals with hereditary non-polyposis colon rectal cancer syndrome, and then annually after that.
TRICARE Standard/Extra offers many more preventative services for beneficiaries. The above are just a small sample of what is covered. If you believe you are a candidate for a health care screening that has not been offered, contact your Primary Care Manager and make an appointment.
