Most of us would agree that we want our houses to smell clean? Yet, smelling clean doesn’t always mean that they are clean. Plus, a pleasing odor does not necessarily mean what we are smell is actually good for us.
What do you think when you hear the word odor? Most people would probably think of something that smelled bad. However, an order is actually gaseous molecules floating around in the air that our sense of smell can detect. These molecules can have bad smells or good ones. Plus, the good smells can actually be full of chemicals that are actually not so great for us. This can include many of the air fresheners that we buy. They are full of chemicals that although smell good, can be irritating to some, causing allergic reactions to occur.
So what can we do to make sure that the smells or odors in our home are good smelling, while not being harmful to us?
We can ventilate
Odor problems sometimes will occur just because there isn’t enough ventilation in a home. We can solve this problem easily by:
• Opening windows at least half way
• Creating a cross breeze in you home by opening opposite windows in a room
• Turning on your air conditioner
• Using fans in your home
Use safe cleaning methods
Steer clear from as many of those chemical based cleaners as you can. Yes, you can still keep your home clean. Just make smarter more greener choices such as:
• Using baking soda. Mix a little bit with water to wash walls and other surfaces. Place a box in your refrigerator to keep it smelling fresh. Sprinkle some in your laundry bin or basket and garbage can to help absorb odors, too.
• Borax can be used to help clean a smelly garbage disposal. Just dump in two teaspoons and run some water through the drain.
• Vinegar mixed with equal parts of water makes a perfect cleaner for many areas of your home.
Make vacuum cleaning a habit
Your vacuum is your best tool at removing unwanted particulars from your carpet and your furniture. Use it as much as you can. Plus, if you use one with a HEPA filter it will remove even more particulars.
Does your house have strange smells?
Some strange smells can be solved with simple solutions; other may involve a more detailed cleaning or even a repair job. Does your house have any of the following smells, if so you may need to do the following?
This could be a sign that you have problems with your main sewer line. Try pouring a couple of cups of peppermint oil down the drain. If this doesn’t work, you may need to call a plumber.
The smell may be coming from the padding of your carpet. Try to steam clean it. If this doesn’t work, you will have to remove the pad and carpet.
This smell can come from cigarettes and cooking. Wash every surface. Wash your curtains. Wash the walls. Finally, consider having your furniture professionally clean.
No, we don’t always know when our house smells clean or not. The best way to find out is to ask a trusted friend, who will tell us the truth and who has a great nose.
