For awhile, they were all the rage, especially with kids. You know, those foam or wooden signs that you hang on your bedroom doorknob to tell others to “Keep Out” or “Quiet, Baby Sleeping”. Those doorknob hangers suddenly became available in versions that had sticky notes, ones with notepads that allowed you to erase and write again – well, there were literally thousands of different designs. Doorknob hangers, whether made from flat foam or wood, have further uses once they leave the doorknob. Turn them into wall décor pieces that can help you organizer or just create something beautiful.
The best doorknob hangers to work with are ones that don’t have notepads and other things attached to them. You can repaint a wooden one, if it has words on it, to use it for this project. There are several different things you can make by using a plain doorknob hanger. One is a fun shelf. Paint a Styrofoam cube to the color you want then glue it to the bottom area of the doorknob hanger. Hang this arrangement and you can set a small picture frame, little statuette or something similar on the cube. To cover the huge hole that allows for the doorknob glue laminate a picture and glue it over the hole.
Use a small cardboard box to make something totally different. Choose a box that’s almost as wide as the hanger and about half as tall. Glue a novelty, picture, a large silk flower or another object over the hole. Paint the box or cover it with decorative paper or cloth. Glue the box to the lower part of the sign and hang it on a wall. This arrangement can hold mail by the computer or notes in the kitchen. Glue button magnets on the back and it can hang on the fridge. Make the organizer slightly different by cutting the box in half before attaching it to the sign.
Use a box or a Styrofoam cube to make an unusual but gorgeous wall planter. When using a cube you can paint it or glue Spanish moss all over it. Stick fake flowers, leaves and reeds into the Styrofoam. Allow some of the greenery to spill over the sides. If you’re using a box you can cut it in half first or glue it on whole. Paint it or cover it with paper or cloth. Glue a small piece of Styrofoam into it, then insert flowers, or simply stuff it with filler and use the filler to hold the flowers in place. Fillers can be anything from Spanish moss to shredded paper.
If you’ve found yourself with one of those doorknob hangers, and it’s no longer needed as a door sign, give it a new life. You’ll love the cute wall hangers and organizers and you’ll enjoy turning the ordinary doorknob hangers into something pretty and useful!
