It can be hard to distinguish exactly what vitamins or herbal supplements we should be taking. We are always hearing that this vitamin can cure this disease or this ailment. Then we hear that this other vitamin is the key to good health. It can be confusing.
This may be why that last year over 27 billion dollars was spent on dietary supplements here in the US. This could also be the reason why over half of the adult population admits to buying into the allure of the food supplements.
Yet, some of these vitamins and supplements are good for us. What should we be taking?
According to Dr. Oz, doctor and host of the popular Dr. Oz television show, if you are a woman over 40 years of age you should be taking these four supplements daily and here is why you should be taking them.
Every woman over the age of 40 should take a daily multivitamin to help prevent heart disease and colon cancer. It is like an insurance policy since it can be hard to ensure that you get the daily amount of vitamins you need each and every day.
A good multivitamin is one that is labeled 100 percent of our daily value and contains vitamins B, C, E and zinc. If a woman is still menstruating it should also contain iron.
You do not need a mega multivitamin. Those are just over kill.
The best way to take your multivitamin is to split it in half. Then take half of it in the morning and the other half in the evening.
Calcium and Magnesium helps to build and strengthen bones and teeth.
Dr. Oz recommends that you take 600 mg of calcium and 400 mg. of magnesium daily, with a full glass of water, two hours after eating. He also stated that you shouldn’t take calcium at the same time that you take your prescription medication because they may interfere with each other.
Vitamin D has been shown to help prevent many diseases such as diabetes and even breast cancer. It can also help the body absorb calcium.
It is best to take vitamin D the first thing in the morning with your breakfast and another fat soluble type food such as your cereal with milk.
The recommend dosage is 1,000 IU daily.
Dr. Oz also recommends that you have your levels of Vitamin D checked through a blood test to make sure they are at the right dosage after taking regularly for a period of time.
Fish Oils protects your brain and heart. It can lower your risk of developing heart disease and reduce your chances of breast cancer by 32%.
Fish Oil contains Omega 3 fatty acids.
No mercury has been found in any fish oil products.
Refrigerate your fish oil to help make them last longer.
Dr. Oz recommends taking 600 mg. of fish oil daily that contain DHA with your breakfast.
