Baking and decorating cakes is a hobby of mine. While I do it mostly for family parties or for my grandchildren’s school events, I still like experimenting with new combinations and fun décor.
I sometimes bake from scratch, but with today’s amazing box mixes, there are times when I feel that is hardly necessary. When I do turn to a box mix, Duncan Hines is one of my favorites. I particularly like their Moist Deluxe cake mixes.
Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe cakes are referred to as “premium”. I think that is an apt title because these cakes are a step above the norm. They are rich in flavor, beautiful in texture, and unbelievably light and airy.
Although I admit an affinity for all things chocolate, I also love Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake. It is like getting the best of both worlds; the marvelous creamy golden cake mixed with decadent chocolate fudge. Yum!
Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake comes in an 18.25-oz box. There are 12 servings in every box.
There are a few less calories in Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake. It weighs in at 240 calories instead of the usual 270 or above. Of that amount, nearly half, or 100 calories, are fat-related.
There are 11 grams of fat in each serving of this cake. Approximately 2.5 grams come from saturated fat, 4.5 grams comes from polyunsaturated fat and 2.5 grams comes from monounsaturated fat. This mix contains no trans fat.
There are 34 grams of carbohydrate, 20 grams of sugar, 280 milligrams of salt and 55 milligrams of cholesterol in this cake mix. That could make this particular cake a somewhat questionable choice for people who are watching intake of those items.
On a positive note; however, there are 3 grams of protein Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake. Unfortunately it contains no fiber.
Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake also offers 15% of the daily-recommended amount of iron and 8% of the required amount of calcium.
Ingredients in the cake itself include dextrose, enriched bleached wheat flour, modified cornstarch, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, shortening, sodium bicarbonate, sugar, vegetable oil, wheat flour and wheat starch. It also includes artificial colors and flavors, cellulose gum, maltodextrin, monocalcium phosphate, mono and diesters of fats, mono and diglycerides, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids, propylene glycol, sodium aluminum phosphate and xanthan gum.
Ingredients in the fudge marble mix include cocoa powder processed with alkali and sugar. The wheat flour is enriched with folic acid, iron, mononitrate, riboflavin and thiamine.
Fixing Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake is simple. All you need to provide is 1.25 cup of water, .66 cup of vegetable oil, and 3 large eggs. However, if you wish to lower the fat content, you can eliminate all of the oil and one of the eggs. Substitute a can of pumpkin instead for those ingredients. Another way to achieve lower fat content is to decrease the water to 1 cup and add .66 cup of unsweetened applesauce along with all three eggs.
Blend the dry and wet ingredients together with an electric mixer. Keep mixing until the batter is smooth and lump free. That will take a couple of minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for glass or metal baking pants. For heavy, dark or coated pans, lower the temperature to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
Remove one cup of the mixed batter and place it into a second, smaller bowl.
Pour the rest of the batter into a pre-greased and floured pan. Now blend the fudge marble mix in with the batter in the smaller bowl. Make certain it is well blended.
Place spoonfuls of the fudge marble batter on top of the yellow cake batter, in equal intervals. Then, using a knife, swirl the two batters together to create the marbling effect.
Bake for about 30 to 35 minutes. Add an additional 5 minutes or so when baking in coated, dark or heavy pans. Be sure to begin checking the cake for doneness every five minutes after the 25-minute mark. Remove when a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
Cool the cake for at least 15 to 30 minutes before attempting to ice. It may take longer for cakes baked in heavy, coated or dark pans.
Here is my summary review:
Taste: 5 stars. Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake is rich, moist, light and airy. When it comes to a pre-packaged cake mixes Duncan Hines offers one of the best.
Appearance: 5 stars: This cake always looks every bit as good as it tastes. The texture is sheer perfection. The yellow part is a rich golden color. The chocolate part is a deep, dark chocolately delight.
Nutrition: 3 stars. We have to face the truth. Cake isn’t particularly good for you. It is high in fat, carbs, sugar and salt. Some are also high in cholesterol. All that cake has to counterbalance the negative is a few grams protein and a touch of iron and calcium. However, as cakes go, Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake is somewhat lower in all those negative things. Also, consumed in moderation, cake is really no worse than any other major dessert.
Ease: 5 stars. This mix couldn’t get much simpler. All you have to do is follow the instructions and you will get a good finished product every time. It does; however, get somewhat complicated when you start experimenting with lowering fat content, etc. It is, therefore, important to be aware than adding additional ingredients into the batter could have an impact on the final product. Finally, it is important to realize that baking time will vary from oven to oven and based upon altitude in the area where you live.
Green rating: 5 stars. The packaging for Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake is biodegradable.
Packaging: 5 stars. Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake comes in a red box with brown and white trim. The Duncan Hines logo helps to distinguish this cake from Betty Crocker’s signature red box.
Ease of storage: 5 stars. The box size is approximately the same as other cake mixes, measuring in at just over 7″ by 5″. It should fit into a standard kitchen cabinet or pantry.
Availability: 5 stars. Duncan Hines products are distributed extensively. They are carried by most grocery stores as well as discount department stores that have a food section. Some Duncan Hines products are even carried in some drug and convenience stores.
Price: 4 stars. The cost varies a lot from store to store. I can purchase a box of Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Fudge Marble Cake at the commissary for just over $1. It can cost nearly three times that in town at Farm Fresh. Duncan Hines does provide plenty of sales promotions and coupons to help keep the cost in line.
Product purchase probability: 5 stars.
