On November 24, 2010, Dwayne Johnson’s new movie “Faster” comes to theaters across the country. In the movie, Johnson plays a man imprisoned for 10 years who is out for vengeance against the men responsible for the death of his brother. Starring alongside Johnson in this action adventure film is Billy Bob Thornton. Thornton is known best for his roles in “Armageddon” with Bruce Willis and “Sling Blade” alongside the late John Ritter. Dwayne Johnson first came to fame wrestling in Vince McMahon’s WWE under the name The Rock. Since leaving the WWE Johnson has starred in several films including “The Scorpion King” and the remake of “Walking Tall”. The Rock is not the first WWE superstar to have success on the big Screen.
Hulk Hogan is one of the most recognizable wrestlers in history. Hogan along with Vince McMahon is credited with taking the wrestling industry to new heights in the 1980’s. Hogan has had a relatively modest movie career as well. Hogan first burst onto the scene in Sylvester Stallone’s mega-hit “Rocky III” as what else, a wrestler named Thunderlips. Hogan also had a cameo in 1990’s “Gremlins 2” playing himself. Hogan’s starring roles include “No Holds Barred” and “Suburban Commando” other movies have had modest success.
Although of all the wrestler turned actors, The Rock has had the most successful movie career, he is hardly the only one that has had hit movies. WWE icon Stone Cold Steve Austin has had some relatively successful movies as well. In 2005, he starred as racist Guard Dunham in Adam Sandler’s comedy remake “The Longest Yard”. He also played Eric Roberts body guard in Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables”. His starring role in “The Condemned” was met with overall good reviews from critics and action movie fans alike.
John Cena is one of the latest WWE superstars to try and transition his in ring fame over to the big screen. Mostly recently, Cena starred alongside Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson and mega-star Danny Glover in “Legendary”. Cena has also had starring roles in “12 Rounds” and “The Marine”. Long before Jesse Ventura was Governor of Minnesota, he was also a WWE superstar. Jesse “The Body” Ventura’s (as he was known in the ring) big screen claim to fame came in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s blockbuster “Predator”. Also, Paul Wight, Jr. better known by his in ring name The Big Show, stars in “Knucklehead” along with Will Patton.
