I admit it. I love “As Seen on TV” products. Some of my best purchases over the years have been made as a result of watching those infamous television infomercials.
However, I don’t think I have ever purchased a product directly from TV. I usually wait until they are available in local stores to give them a try. That way, it is easier to return those that do not work. I’m against paying exorbitant return shipping fees.
My latest “As Seen on TV” product is called E-Z Engraver. I never actually saw the original product on television. I just stumbled across this one during one of my many trips to the Dollar Tree.
The idea behind E-Z Engraver; however, is that you can engrave your household goods and jewelry so that, in the event of robbery, they could be easily returned if found. I have been looking for something like this product for many years because of my jewelry collection and my husband’s love of electronic gadgets.
E-Z Engraver makes several claims. Let’s review those and see if they hold any credence at all.
Claim #1 says E-Z Engraver is easy to use. That claim is false. The first problem you encounter with this engraving pen is figuring out how it works. While the package clearly states that the pen uses 2 AA batteries, it does not tell you how to load them. After trying every configuration under the sun, we finally got the thing to turn on. However, the pen is difficult to hold because of its size and finding the right amount of pressure to exert is had. Finally, the pen skips, making it difficult to clearly engrave anything. Therefore E-Z Engraver gets 0 stars on this claim.
Claim #2 says the pen will engrave almost any surface. It particularly lists glass, metal, plastic and wood. Wrong again! Because the pen skips, it slides easily on glass, metal and plastic, leaving behind a squiggling of nonsensical information. While it does better on wood, it doesn’t engrave deep enough, making it easy to buff out the information. It gets 1 star here and even that falls into the “iffy” category.
Claim #3 says it works just like a pen. It does not. The piece is bulky at 7″ in length and over 1″ in diameter. It was difficult to hold in my small hand. While my husband fared a bit better, it is still too big to allow you to actually write with it. Therefore, it gets only 1 star here.
Claim #4 says it will help protect your property by allowing you to engrave your details onto it. Wrong, once more. If you can’t get the thing to work or to work only part way, you actually end up with a mess on your property, perhaps further compounding the authorities attempt to find lost or stolen goods. It gets 0 stars for this claim.
Claim #5 says battery replacement is easy. Not so! It takes forever to figure out how to get the batteries in the pen in the first place; in the right direction, etc. After we did, the top kept popping off each time we tried to use the pen and the batteries automatically jumped out because of spring insets. Once more, E-Z Engraver fails, getting just 1 star.
That is 2 stars out of a possible 25, clearly marking the E-Z Engraver as a product you should avoid like the plague. Can anyone way rip off? Even at $1, this product is a travesty.
Package instructions advise to wear protective eyewear when using E-Z Engraver. Of course, that assumes that you can get the pen to work in the first place. The real danger would be the batteries flying out at you when the lid pops off for the umpteenth time.
It also says to use the pen, hold it like a pen, pressing the power button down with your thumb as you engrave the chosen surface. Ensure that pressure is even and lightly applied with the pen held at a slight angle. To turn off, just remove your thumb from the power button.
E-Z Engraver requires 2 AA batteries, which do not come with the product. The right way to put the batteries into the pen is with the positive end of each battery facing upwards.
When the batteries require replacement, replace them both at the same time. Never replace a single battery as it will ultimately effect the way the product works.
E-Z Engraver is a product of TEE VEE Brands. Greenbrier International, Inc. in Chesapeake, Virginia distributes it.
