Mankind has survived for million years; and even in recent history, by the skin of the teeth! Ancient realities could have been much worse with more hostile elements & animals out to get us, but with less protection. But now, we have to run for our lives and protect ourselves from our own, more often! Enemies are mostly within, and with weapons getting more potent by the day. It is clear we are nowhere near a safe haven; but, maybe, getting nearer to doomsday.
No doubt, scientific progress has been achieved, but along with more moral decay. We tend to get over-confident that we have better tools to survive the odds. We are living beyond our means; instead of finding balance with needed sacrifices, we try to invent ways to overcome our created misery. Like quantitative easing, just flooding liquidity in the economy to boost demand; overdoing short-term quick-fixes, as we cannot think of taking the bitter medicines for real healing!
Are we not creating an ice cream generation which melts in hot weather? The detailed planning and hard work that went behind the wonders of the world, and even now created in China through hard work, is avoided. We hope against hope that our ills will disappear when we wake-up in the morning, without taking required action. Even our leaders have to watch their steps, with endless elections and polls to assess their ratings. So the feel good factor is factored-in, in the whole scheme of things; not what the doctor ordered to get well; we treat only the symptoms, not the disease!
The lessons are avoided across the board; even basics to survive are opposed, tooth and nail, despite clear signs of our very vitals under threat. The pension & social security reforms in Europe are opposed in the streets; we are just sweeping the issues under the carpet, and thereby, robbing our future generations. In effect, we will leave a worse state of affairs than what we inherited. The challenge and cost will prove much more, when they pick-up the pieces.
Each generation will be tested for their mettle, like in our individual lives. History is replete with leaders, who led from the front and united people to face great odds. But do we have such leaders in our midst to lead us than just do our bidding? Are we not losing time in semantics all the time, putting-off facing real issues? Are we not buying time, hoping against hope that things will work-out in the end, and even believe in clearly ill-advised experiments will save us from real actions necessary, but in the end land us in a bigger hole? We are inundated by dire warnings of great catastrophes, not only natural but also man-made, both economic and by unsustainable lifestyles, but some still feed us with hope that we will be spared, despite clear signs to the contrary.
What prevents us from taking the issues head-on? Are we soft and spoilt, finding scapegoats and blame others, without putting our house in order? Are we not failing the test of character, by avoiding & postponing needed actions, self-absorbed by our indulgences? It definitely looks like computer games are having their effects on real life situations; that we can live on a in a reel world, than face the real one. We know what to do but we just lack the will to do it, with needed sacrifices. It is like not waking-up after the alarm clock is set, and then look for excuses to sleep again!
However old-fashioned the previous generations look now, they had the mettle to face harsh realities of life, make needed sacrifices, and overcome great odds. We are more blessed, with an easier lifestyle, due to their efforts which proves to be our undoing, unable to face the harsh realities. Survival might not be at stake now; but beneath the calm waters, there are dangers, which we just hope will not surface; we lack the will to preserve our position in the sun, for selfish reasons. Our foundation is shaky, and it is time we refortified it with character, hard work and sacrifices. It is our bounden duty to keep fighting for a better world, just like our forefathers did, with much less of everything, but with greater heart to survive and to leave a better world.
