God Calling’s message today is about fresh starts. The Bible tells us that God’s mercies are new each morning. This message encourages me to examine my relationships.
Am I holding on to resentment over something that happened yesterday or the day before-anytime in the past? It could very well be the cause of the strain in our relationship today. Do I have an unresolved issue with you? Do we need to clear the air and wipe the slate between us clean? Grievances left unsettled, either because of lack of communication or caring are like a water leak. It all starts with one little drip and builds and builds if left unchecked. Pretty soon, instead of having to replace just one little rubber seal or one little washer, you have to replace the whole faucet and maybe more than that. The Bible tells us than when we have something against a brother or sister, to “leave our gift at the altar and first go quickly and make peace with him/her.” We’re supposed to admonish each other in love. Love acts with respect, taking care to preserve one another’s dignity. Only in this way, when things between us are handled right away, and in the right way, can we put them behind us and leave them there.
This message also encourages me to take a good look at my dealings with myself. Am I holding on to guilt? Is it even rightfully mine? Why am I not able to forgive myself and/or accept God’s forgiveness or, and including the person I may have wronged? Then, too, I have to ask myself, “Am I using that as an excuse?” It’s easy to live up to a low level, especially when you have excuses. The Bible tells us to forget those things which are behind us and press onward. We’re also encouraged to think about and focus on “whatsoever is lovely, just, worthy of praise, etc.” The positive things in that negative situation are the stepping stones we need to bring out with us and we need to use them to go forward to empowerment, improvement and to better “selves: and better relationships in every arena. Today really is the first day of the rest of your life. How you use it is up to you. Will you get better? Or, will you stay bitter? God loves you! He wants you to love you too.
