If you’re a little short of spending money this Christmas, but you want to give nice gifts to your family and friends anyway, just make the presents yourself. There are lots of homemade gifts you can make that will impress the recipient. One is a recipe box with matching recipe cards. It’s cheap and easy to make the gift but the recipient won’t know that!
Start with a cardboard box that’s an appropriate size for recipe cards. You can make the cards as large or small as you want so any number of boxes will work for this project. If the box has a separate lid, that’s great, but if it has no lid, that’s okay, too.
Decide on the theme – if any – you want to give the recipe box and cards. With scrapbook paper you can cover the box to give it a Victorian theme, nautical theme, a cooking theme or another theme. If you have no scrapbook paper wrap the box with gift wrap or a different type of paper. Cut the paper to be larger than you need then tuck the excess inside to cover the interior walls. Cut a separate piece and glue it to the inside bottom. If the box has a lid wrap it as well.
There are many different ways to make the recipe box and cards. You can write recipes on ordinary 3×5″ cards, colored cards, scrapbook paper cards or others. If you have scrapbook paper to match the box you can cut pieces of it and use them as the recipe cards.
If you’re using paper to make the cards, double it to make it sturdier. Or, glue scrapbook paper pieces to the 3×5″ cards. Write down your favorite recipes or gather some online. Hand-write the recipes on the cards or print recipes from your printer.
There are other things you can do to make the recipe set more impressive. Use stickers, paint markers, rubber stamps, scrapbook embellishments and similar things to make the cards fancier. Or, mount a painted wooden shape on the front of the box.
The recipes in the box can be all main meals, all desserts, or can be an assortment of recipes. It makes a really nice gift for most any woman and some men. The gift doesn’t cost much to make but the new owner of the recipe set will absolutely love it!
