I love Italian sodas. I love that Italian sodas taste a million times better than any commercial soda, and the fact that they’re so customizable! Italian sodas are amazing, but if you buy them at a coffee stand, they can cost upward of $3-4 each! Italian sodas get spendy! Having worked as a barista, I know exactly how to make them like the pros!
8 oz Club Soda
2 oz Flavored Coffee Syrup
1 oz Half & Half
Helpful Hint: If you’re in a bind and don’t have any half and half, you can substitute it with milk. Be warned, however, that it may separate from the drink as it settles! It tastes just as good as the real deal, but can be a bit of a hassle. Half and half is preferable, but milk will suffice if needed.
Fill your cup 1/2 to 3/4 full of ice. Many people prefer the smaller ice chunks available at the store, however, any kind of ice will work.
Add syrup. Using a flavored coffee syrup of your choice, pour it over the ice. It will settle towards the bottom of the glass. You may find you want more or less than two ounces. Experiment to determine what you like. If you’d like it sweeter, add more. If you’d like it less sweet, add less.
Add club soda. Pour club soda directly over ice and syrup. The club soda may or may not blend with the syrup. Either is normal.
Add half and half. You may want more than an ounce, you may want less. Some people totally omit this step. It all depends on your preference.
If your cup has a lid, you can gently shake your drink to mix it, otherwise, use a knife to blend it together. Using a spoon may be too difficult with a large amount of ice.
Enjoy! These Italian sodas are fun, delicious and enjoyable! You might try mixing flavors to create new concoctions. Think, watermelon/kiwi, strawberry/banana, chocolate/caramel! The possibilities are endless!
