I hate cooking, with enough passion to actually have a love of refraining from the kitchen. However, if I want to indulge in more than cold cereal and coffee during the days, I actually do poke my head into the mysterious kitchen now and then to make something to eat. Ever since I found out you can microwave instant rice, it is now my very best friend EVER and I’ve been rotating some rice dishes that are sure to make all other cook haters to enjoy the kitchen at least for 5 minutes.
All you have to do is place a cup of instant rice in a bowl, add a cup of water, toss in some seasonings (I like 1/4 cube artificial chicken bullion, garlic powder, and dried vegetable flakes, and about 8 tablespoons of pepper…) and toss that bugger in the microwave for 5 minutes. When you hear the magical ding, open the microwave and the square machine has somehow produced you a cooked meal! Oh, joy! What’s better, is you can mess with rice to produce many other dishes in the microwave as well. You can also use this same recipe to make many dishes, just double this recipe for as many people as you are hoping to feed.
If you take a big bowl (I “borrow” my dog’s water dish) and dump in a can of creamed soup, add 2 cups of instant rice, add 1 can water, 1 can milk, and toss the sucker in the microwave again for 5 minutes, this time, you have created a rice and creamed whatever soup! ( I like cream of asparagus and cream of mushroom, oo- and a great one is broccoli cheese! but to each their own). What joy! Enough to feed you for a week, even, or to surprise your family and actually indulge them in a meal that doesn’t get served via knocking on the front door by a stranger.
I’ve learned that if you cook carrots in the microwave long enough in a bowl of water, they, too, can be added to rice, and that you can even cook boxed pasta in the microwave so long as you stir it often. Holy Toledo- I can cook! I love you microwave, big hug! So if you hate to cook, just remember- a bowl of instant rice can be made in the microwave in 5 minutes, and if you have a bowl large enough, you can dump entire contents of boxed pastas into it and cook until it’s done if you stir it often. Keeps you away from the dreaded stove, and still manages to feed you and your entire family if you have to.
