If you think you need to buy expensive salad dressing to dress up your salad, think again! You can make a variety of quick and easy (not to mention delicious!) salad dressings in just a few minutes by using stuff you already have in your refrigerator!
Here are just a few ingredients you can use to make salad dressing:
Any kind of pickle juice – One great way to spiff up a salad is to pour on a bit of juice from any jar of pickles or from a jar of anything pickled, like pickled mushrooms, pickled peppers, pickled eggs, etc. You can even add the juice from a jar of olives!
Mayonnaise and Condiments – Mayonnaise is awesome to use as the base for any salad dressing. Mix it with a bit of milk to thin it to the consistency you like and use it as is or spruce it up by adding your favorite seasonings, chopped onions, garlic, and other condiments like catsup, relish, etc. If you mix up equal amounts of mayonnaise, catsup and sweet relish, and thin it with a bit of milk, you will have a fantastic Thousand Island dressing!
Cottage Cheese – You can turn cottage cheese into delicious salad dressing by adding a bit of salt and pepper and a dab of horseradish. You can also add condiments like with the mayonnaise suggestions. But cottage cheese makes a nice lumpy salad dressing… for those of you who like lumps! It almost makes you think you are eating a chunky blue cheese dressing!
Sour Cream – Use sour cream as a base just as you would the mayonnaise.
Salsa – Salsa makes a wonderful salad dressing all on it’s own. But you can make a creamy salsa dressing by adding a bit of mayonnaise or cottage cheese or sour cream (or all!) and mixing it up!
The Kitchen Sink – You can experiment by using a variety of the mixtures below. For instance, you can mix any type of pickle juice with mayo for a creamy type pickled dressing. You can mix any condiments together for different flavors. Just have fun with it!
