Here are a few simple adjustments that I have found to enhance any image in Photoshop. They are quick, effective and you don’t have to be a Photoshop genius to use them.
Auto Tone, Auto Contrast and Auto Color are all great ways to enhance your Photographs without spending too much time in Photoshop. To use them, select Image on the toolbar menu and then select one of the tools from the drop down list. Start by applying Auto Contrast to your photographs and then apply Auto Tone and Auto color until you reach the desired result. Auto Tone and Auto Color both tend to apply too many color filters to photographs that have a lot of the same colors in one place, so be picky with them. Sometimes they help and sometimes they don’t. It all depends on the image, so pick and choose as you see fit. You can use Edit and then Step Backwards to undo any of these applications.
Use the Vibrance tool to intensify the color vibrancy in your photographs. You can find it in Image, Adjustments and then Vibrance. When the tool opens it will give you two adjustment sliders to work with. The top slider adjusts the vibrancy of the colors in your image and the bottom slider adjusts the level of saturation, or how much of that vibrancy will actually show up. This is my favorite Photoshop tool. The best way that I have found to use it is to slide the Vibrance slider all the way to the right to 100% vibrancy and then adjust the saturation slider until you are satisfied with the results.
The Curves tool can be a bit intimidating at first glance, but it really isn’t that difficult to figure out. The tool simply adjusts the way that you perceive light in a photograph. It is actually amazing how much this one tool can affect your image. The default setting that I apply to all of my images can be seen in the curves image that accompanies this article. You can use it or play around with the curve adjuster until you find the setting that best fits your image.
