The El Monterey Beef and Bean Burritos Family Pack retails for just under three dollars at Walmart and in a package comes eight burritos. The low price coupled with the high number of burritos made this frozen product difficult to pass up, so I purchased one package to see if the quality was good enough for me to have these burritos regularly. I was a bit skeptical since the burritos were pretty cheap, but I figured I might as well give them a try otherwise every time I pass them in the store, I am going to wonder about them. One burrito takes close to forty minutes to fully cook in the oven and the burrito itself is fairly plump and reasonably long. These are not mini burritos or anything like that. With two sides to go along with my burrito, one burrito proved to be plenty for me. There is actually quite a bit of beef in each burrito, and sometimes, when I cook one in the oven, some of the beef escapes from the tortilla. The El Monterey Burritos come pretty full and that surprised me a little since again, the price made me wonder just how much beef was going to be in the burritos.
The beef is seasoned with some spices and seasonings, and that helps the beef to not be plain. The beans are actually ground up and mixed in with the beef, so I never actually see any beans, but they still do contribute to the overall flavor of the burritos. The tortilla comes out of the oven a little on the hard side, but the tortilla shell is not so hard that it becomes difficult to chew. The tortilla shell is slightly more tough than say the ones at Taco Bell or Taco Bueno or a regular Mexican restaurant, but it does not detract from my enjoyment of these burritos. These burritos do not come with cheese, but I have found that it is real easy to add cheddar cheese to these burritos. Rather than try to unwrap them, which would be a very difficult and messy task that would destroy the burrito, I just add the cheddar cheese to the top of the burrito about ten minutes before the burrito is ready to come out of the oven. The cheddar cheese melts over the burrito, and although it may not tasty as good as a burrito where the cheese is placed directly with the beef, the solution I came up with works and I am satisfied with the flavor of the burrito with the melted cheddar cheese on top.
The El Monterey Beef and Bean Burritos Family Pack is a good buy whether the whole family has a craving for burritos or if just one person is going to be eating them. It is an affordable and easy option to go with for dinner one night a week. One burrito alone will not fill up the stomach unless a couple of sides are prepared to accompany the burrito. The burritos themselves taste great with the seasoned beef and beans and the flour tortilla has a decent flavor to it too. The burritos can be prepared multiple ways as the packaging indicates, and although I have only cooked them in the oven, I believe that however these burritos are heated, they are going to taste really good, and I know now that I have purchased one package and found the burritos to be more than satisfactory, I will be purchasing many more.
