Elin Nordegren, the ex-wife of Tiger Woods, gave a personal interview to People Magazine this week, and while reading it I could not help but think why we never got to know her this way before the Tiger Woods affairs became news.
We knew Woods had a wife; we saw pictures of the gorgeous blond, who was usually giving an adoring look to her husband when the two were captured together. We never got to know Elin Woods much more than that. I think this is why there was more sympathy for Sandra Bullock than there was for Nordegren when their husband’s similar affairs broke out.
Bullock was the victim of her husband’s sex scandal and the public never swayed from that thought while she was going through her separation. We were not that quick to take Nordegren under our wings though, we found ways to make her partially to blame. We were quick to believe she injured him with a golf club and rumors regarding Elin being cold and somewhat of a control freak somehow acted to let Woods off the hook a bit.
In Nordegren’s interview, she set a few things straight, such as she did not hit Woods with a golf club. She says she is not a violent person and I tend to believe her. She is not a stupid woman, she speaks five languages. Nordegren is humble, she says she modeled a bit in high school, but was never very good at it. Her job as a nanny was all she had under her belt when meeting Woods, so she wasn’t brought up like royalty.
Nordegren adores her kids and they come first, she tells a story of how her daughter picked up on her sadness at times, wanting to fix her mommy’s “boo-boo”.
Nordegren was 21 years old when she started dating Woods and she became his wife not long after that. She was a stay at home mother who loved and adored the man she married. When she found out about the affairs Woods was involved in, she explains it as “she went through hell”.
A young wife and mother, who was away from her native country, and finding out that her marriage was a lie was devastating to the young Nordegren. She went from disbelief, to anger, and now she is at a point where she is grieving from the loss of a family she thought was intact all along.
Nordegren got a reported 100 million dollar divorce settlement in which she says that “money cannot buy happiness”. She does say however that “the money is making things a bit easier because it allows her to be with her kids all the time.”
Does she hate Woods for all that he has done, the heartache, humiliation, and the destruction of their family unit? No, she wishes him nothing but the best. Nordegren still believes in love, although she is not interested in pursuing a new relationship just yet. “It seems that my world as I knew it, never existed”, she tells People Magazine. It is going to take some time for her to trust again.
If we had know this blond haired Swedish beauty for the woman that she really is, we may have been a more sympathetic with her, as we were with Sandra Bullock.
Woods appeared to have kept her tucked away, maybe to shield her from the harshness of the media, after all she came from a humble background and the press was something she was not use to. But, if we had got to know her, we could have extended some warmness towards this woman who was suffering through a very bad time.
Although Nordegren found the South Park episode and other comical parodies to be funny, (even though she never hit Woods), maybe the angle of poking fun would have been directed more at Woods himself, where it belonged.
Getting to know Elin Nordegren Woods was something else Tiger Woods took away from the American public along with our trust in him to live up to the idol the world had made him.
