After years of back and forth with the city council, the Emagine Theater people finally broke ground on their new facility in Royal Oak.
The Emagine Theaters are a popular Michigan venue. Billed as a cut above “regular” theaters, Emagine offers high-definition viewing, student discounts, frequent movie-goer rewards, dinner and a movie, cocktails and a Shooters Club luxury lounge. Current Emagine Theaters are located in Canton, Novi, Birch Run and Woodhaven. Plans are in the works for another Emagine in Rochester.
The Royal Oak site, located at 11 Mile Road and Troy and just behind the Royal Oak Main Art Theater, was once a supermarket. During the housing bubble, a developer bought the property and razed it, making room for a condo development. (There are a lot of condos and lofts in Royal Oak, in case anyone is interested.) The real estate bubble promptly burst, leaving residents with an empty field on the perimeter of the downtown.
Recent city council meetings have addressed concerns with parking once the theater is in place. Many residents on nearby side streets were concerned about having enough space for themselves. There is a huge parking structure right behind at the Main North Lofts, meter parking across the street at the Farmers’ Market, and other paid parking structures within walking distance.
It is hoped that with the addition of an Emagine Theater location in Royal Oak, local businesses like bars, restaurants and boutiques will see increased sales.
A bowling alley will also be included in the Emagine Theater building.
