Do you know what to do if someone you’re with accidentally has a permanent tooth knocked out? Your quick action could make the difference in a successful re-implant or the loss of the tooth. Here are steps that would increase the chances of a successful re-implant if followed in a calm and practical manner.
1- Always hold the tooth by the crown (top) as to not damage the nerve fibers which might be exposed.
***If dealing with a cooperative adult, the tooth should gently be placed back in the socket.
** You could also place the tooth gently between the cheek and gum of the victim or any willing adult. This keeps the root moist as well as protecting it from bacteria.
2- If the person cannot do this OR the victim is a child, do the following:
a- Place tooth in milk, saline or saliva. Keep tooth moist.
Do NOT use water to transport!
b- Transport tooth and patient to dentist immediately.
3- If bleeding from the socket is seen, rinse mouth gently with cold water. Place a small wadded piece of gauze into the socket and apply pressure by gently biting down.
