The Emmy Awards 2010 are not far off now. Yet for all the anticipation at the Emmy Awards 2010, the end could feature the same old Emmy awards winners. Last year, there were very few upsets, and very few new surprising winners. The likes of Mad Men, 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin, Bryan Cranston and Glenn Close once again won the night, and are all contending again tonigh. Some of these shows still have a lot of support, while many are rooting against the others, or have found new favorites. Yet for the Emmy Awards 2010, the old and the new will be facing off virtually everywhere.
In the Best Drama and Best Comedy categories, Mad Men and 30 Rock could be winners together for the third straight time. However, 30 Rock comes in as the underdog this time, after a mixed fourth season and after the breakout debuts of Glee and Modern Family. If the series wins for the fourth straight time, less people are likely to be happy about it.
Yet the Emmy Awards 2010 are expected to keep Mad Men on top, although fewer fans might be upset about that. However, if there are chinks in their armor, a few new and old shows could take advantage. Breaking Bad and The Good Wife have strong cases, as The Good Wife is another breakout new show, and Breaking Bad has already met with Emmy success. Yet Lost, which won as a freshman five years ago, could sneak in for one last triumph at the end.
In the acting categories, the Emmy Awards 2010 have traditional winners under threat. Alec Baldwin’s quest for a three peat is threatened by Jim Parsons, although three-time champ Tony Shalhoub might get a final sendoff. But for best actress comedy, past winners Toni Colette, Tina Fey, and Julia Louis Dreyfus face Edie Falco, who is used to winning in drama.
Bryan Cranston still hasn’t slipped after two straight victories, yet the Emmy Awards 2010 have overdue actors Michael C. Hall, Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, Kyle Chandler and Matthew Fox vying to dethrone him. Glenn Close’s three peat chances are more uncertain thanks to Julianna Margulies, who is back at the Emmys for the first time since her ER days.
In supporting categories, Aaron Paul tries to break through against past winners Michael Emerson, Terry O’Quinn and Andre Braugher. Neil Patrick Harris has been shut out in Best Supporting Actor Comedy before, yet he already has two Emmys in 2010. Elisabeth Moss or Christina Hendricks could become the first Mad Men cast member to win, while Jane Lynch is guaranteed to bring some new blood to the winners circle.
For the reality competition and variety show races, The Amazing Race and The Daily Show try to add to their lengthy winning streaks. While Amazing Race might be safe, the Emmy Awards 2010 could dethrone The Daily Show, just to get Conan O’Brien on stage.
In most seasons, critics and fans complain that the same old shows and actors get in, no matter what they did for the year. But some fresh air is in the Emmy Awards 2010 – it’s just a question of how much will get into the winners collection.
