Learning English as a second language is the goal many people want to accomplish in their lifetime. English is spoken in many countries as the primary language and in many, it is the secondary language. Many people want to learn English as a second language, but they don’t know how. Reading a book or listening to an audio recording is not enough. There are some things you can do to learn English as a second language faster than normal and that is what this article will focus in on.
1) Practice! The old saying “practice makes perfect” is absolutely true when it comes to learning the English language. Most people that are trying to learn English are afraid to practice because they know they will make mistakes. Making mistakes is the key to learning and learning English as a second language comes with hours of practice with people that are fluent in English. Carry a dictionary around with you in case you need to use it. Practicing with people that aren’t fluent benefits in some ways, but if you are speaking wrong, they may not be able to properly correct you. Practice often with people that are fluent and that practice will eventually make close to perfect.
2) Spend as much time away from people that speak your language and more time with people that don’t speak any language but English. The tendency is for non-English speakers to gravitate to people that speak their language, but this will not improve their English. You must get around people that you know cannot speak to you in your own native tongue. At first, this may not be comfortable, and you may feel a little out of the loop, but eventually, you will be forced to speak English.
3) Watch the television in English and listen to radio stations that speak in English! Many times, the English that you are learning will be on the T.V. or radio and sometimes, you will listen to something for an hour and understand five percent. News is good to listen to because they don’t use a lot of slang because their job does not allow it. In the beginning, it will be frustrating not to understand much, but when you start to get bits and pieces of what is being said, it will motivate you more because you have seen some improvement.
Learning English as a second language has many benefits, and can be done a little faster than normal using these steps.
