Should Entrepreneur’s Have a Small Business Website?
Having a website for a business may seem like a big decision, and I have seen many people who try to take advantage of business owners who believe in empty promises. Some entrepreneur’s have decided to go without websites because they do not know whom to trust.
As an entrepreneur small business owner, a little education goes a long way. I am both a website designer and a small business owner, and I have written this article to help small businesses understand the basics of buying a website.
Every business must have a website. It proves you are legitimate.
Free Websites for Entrepreneurs
There are many free websites out there. I have seen many entrepreneur’s who want to network or attract business, and they have a free website and an @yahoo.com email address. In a small way, it is slightly better than having no website at all. However, scammers are using free websites more and more to defraud people out of money. There is no long-term commitment, it is free, so why not?
Consumers have been surprisingly slow to understand the internet and the security risks associated with it. As consumers become more aware of online security threats, your free website stands to hurt your business reputation and brand image.
$100 Websites for Entrepreneurs
Some people have outsourced websites for $100. These websites look fine. They are missing any SEO (search engine optimization), and the communication is slow to get the websites built. $100 websites are just empty shell websites, and some web designer somewhere is copying and pasting your text into the website.
Do not let them provide any images to you. You can bet the images will be used on other webpages as well, and nothing says I am not legitimate more than having the same image as the scammers.com webpage.
Outsourcing is what it is. Communication problems and other issues arrive when you hire someone overseas.
Custom Built Websites for the Entrepreneur
A custom-built webpage will cost about $1,500-$15,000. The benefits of having a special built webpage is that it shows you are serious about your business. It is the difference between having a mobile home or a brick and mortar storefront. Everyone knows the mobile homes are not built to last.
If you are an entrepreneur small business owner and a service provider (such as plumber, carpet cleaner, etc) your webpage is your storefront. Can you imagine if you bought your supplies from a store that was located in a mobile office? It is a different experience than going to a physical store, and it is the same experience with pre-built websites or free websites.
The $15,000 websites are generally e-commerce websites. Business owners wanting to sell their goods directly on their websites think they can save the mark up of traditional stores by selling online. Having an e-commerce website is expensive to make and maintain, and many entrepreneurs fail to realize that.
E-commerce is a serious commitment. You cannot just set up a $100 website and start selling away. You need special security pages, merchant accounts, customer service, etc.
