Royal Oak residents have been troubled recently by smoke and noxious fumes coming from Equipment Assets, a business at 1200 Knowles Ave. Equipment Assets is seeking a new location after complaints.
What began as a computer maintenance and rebuilding operation has expanded to metal salvaging, since the price of scrap has increased. Residents began complaining when they noticed black smoke from burning rubber, increased truck trade and noxious odors coming from Equipment Assets. Locals have videotaped Equipment Assets operations engaged in various building code violations. No fire department codes have been broken but the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment found Equipment Assets in violation of the Clean Air Act. Zoning Board action is pending against Carnwarth and Equipment Assets for failure to use the property according to it’s zone restrictions. Carnwarth has assured residents that Equipment Assets is seeking a new location, but the concern is whether Equipment Assets will continue it’s Clean Air Violations, only in a new location. MDNRE has set November 15 as the deadline for corrective action.
