The Daily Beast came up with the Secret Code of Sports Mistresses when writing about Tennessee Titan Steve McNair’s gruesome death and his extramarital relationship with his lover Sahel Kazemi. Supposedly, the code is made of unspoken rules held by the women who prey on athletes without regrets. The most important rule is the first one:
“You do not fall in love. EVER. Unless you are Eva Longoria. And even then….”
Exactly, the “even then” is the clause breaker for the code. Eva Longoria is possibly another victim as the result of the adulterous behavior of athletes. TMZ reported that Barry Brent’s estranged wife, Erin, is supposedly the other woman in the affair. Barry Brent played with Tony Parker from 2004 to 2008 on the San Antonio Spurs.
But more than the unspoken rules, there is the stark reality that 80 to 90% of professional athletes cheat according to a report from CNN quoted by the Daily Beast.
A study by Steven M. Ortiz, an assistant professor of sociology at Oregon State University presented findings on the “fast food sex mentality” among professional atheletes. He interviewed 47 wives of professional athletes in football, baseball, hockey and of course, basketball. Ortiz studied the social dynamics of their marriages and found differences between those who married for fame, money and glamour versus those married for love. The group that married for glamour and a higher economic status was most tolerant of extramarital indiscretions. Those who had developed a relationship before their husbands became professional athletes did not tolerate any drawn out extramarital affairs. They achieved a strategy of dealing with one night stands, but not the long affairs.
Let’s include Eva Longoria Parker in this group.
According to Extra, there were allegations that the cheating occurred on Facebook with another woman and it was drawn out over a year. Eva confronted Tony about it. And then there were the personal texts sent between Tony and his new lover– hundreds in one month.
Tony Parker isn’t the only athlete accused of an affair. He joins the ranks of the following:
He split from Cynthia Rodriguez in 2008. Supposedly, an ex-stripper said to the Boston Herald that she spent two nights with A-Rod. It was reported on Fox News. Cynthia filed for “emotional abadonment” as the reason for dissolution.
According to Street Level, he split from Ginny Barber when she was eight months pregnant with twins. Again, there were accusations of an extra marital affair in the divorce papers.
The most famous of all the athletes who found himself in a long battle with Elin Nordegren after women popped out of nowhere claming that they had indiscretions with him. After his famed stinst in a sexual “addiction” rehabilitation center and tons of apologies, the divorce papers were filed. According to TMZ, they did not reveal the details of the split, but it was clear to the public.
What can Eva Longoria do now?
“Most of the wives are very strong, intelligent and resilient. That’s why the men married them in the first place,” said Ortiz as to his study. Most indiscretions are ignored by team members, managers and trainers. Some are even encouraged making it an ‘adultery culture.’
Maybe it’s time for Eva Longoria to use her intelligence and resilience to continue moving on. She took the first step by filing for divorce today.
