Through many decades these two had been friends
Shared many adventures, went through many trends.
Helped each other through child-rearing years,
Shared much laughter, and shed many tears.
They shared the joys and sorrows of their full lives,
And they had buried their mates, these two aging wives.
Activities they enjoyed were beginning to fade
But they helped each other remember appointments they made.
They were limited to meeting a few times a week now
For playing cards and visiting, about all they knew now.
One day as they were enjoying their limited play
One said to the other, “I have something to say.”
“We’ve been friends a long time now, and been through a lot,
But I have to ask you your name, cause i just plum forgot.”
Her friend just looked at her a full three minutes or so,
Then she said, “How soon to you need to know?”
