There is little that is any more sophisticated and classic than toile print. These gorgeous toile print embellished pumpkins are great for displaying from Halloween through Thanksgiving. Use a faux pumpkin for a design you can use across multiple seasons.
For this project, you will need (per pumpkin):
– One faux pumpkin or real pumpkin in any size
– Mild dish detergent
– Paper towels
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Equestrian
– Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
– Painter’s tape or masking tape
– Craft paper or a dissembled paper bag
– Brown toile print fabric (available at local craft supply and fabric supply shops)
– Fabric scissors
– Fabric marking pen
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other type of decoupage medium
– Popsicle stick
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Cover your crafting space with sheets of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth prior to starting. Gently use a bit of mild dish detergent to wash the outside of either a faux pumpkin or a real pumpkin. Rinse the outside of the pumpkin and the stem. Dry the pumpkin with paper towels and let it continue to air dry for an hour or so.
Use strips of painter’s tape or masking tape to cover the stem of the pumpkin. Prime the pumpkin with several thick layers of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Keep adding coats until the orange of the pumpkin rind no longer shines through. Let the primer dry completely.
Paint the pumpkin with four to five coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Equestrian. Let the brown paint dry a couple hours before proceeding.
Lay the piece of brown toile print fabric flat and pattern side down on the work area. Use a ruler and a fabric marking pen to determine the toile pattern you wish to have on the pumpkin. This can be a saying, lettering, shapes, a design, or even fabric stripes. The choice is yours. Carefully cut out the toile design with a pair of fabric scissors.
Use a sponge brush to apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of the toil print fabric design. Immediately adhere the fabric to the body of the brown painted pumpkin. Smooth the fabric with a popsicle stick and a bit of pressure. Let the glue dry fully.
Coat the entire pumpkin with a few coats of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray. Dry overnight before displaying your new creation.
