This guide will cover the Hit Points or HP derived statistic in Fallout: New Vegas. Derived statistics are a second set of values based on your characters primary S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes. There are additional ways of modifying these statistics beyond just increasing your primary attributes and these ways will be covered here, along with information on everything you need to know about Hit Points or HP. These attributes such as Hit Points or HP are noticed more often in the mechanics of the game, usually having large impacts on how the game is played.
Hit Points are the most important statistic to pay attention to for your character in Fallout New Vegas. Hit Points represent the overall hardiness of your character and thusly, determines how much damage you are able to take before succumbing to death. All characters have a finite amount of Hit Points in the game, and dropping this value to 0 will kill them, with the exception of companions in non hardcore mode, who become temporarily unconscious.
Hit Points are distributed amongst your body parts, each one being able to take a portion of damage based on your total hit point pool before becoming crippled. Attacking limbs is beneficial for the sole reason that you can hamper specific abilities of a character without having to outright killing them. This becomes useful in situations such as shooting the arms of an armored opponent, causing them to drop the weapon held in the crippled arm, giving you more time to finish them off.
There are various methods of restoring HP. Stimpacks and various drinks and food heal a pool of HP either instantly or over time. Doctors Bags can heal your limbs, or applying a Stimpack with less effect. Finding a bed to rest in and sleeping for at least an hour will completely restore all hit points and limb damage.
