Sometimes taking the family to a restaurant is a difficult task: you have to find a restaurant with the right atmosphere, as well as one with a menu that will please the entire family, including fussy children. In Amherst, New York, more and more family-friendly restaurants are popping up – these are three of the area’s top choices.
Bill Gray’s – two locations in the Amherst area (Boulevard Mall Food Court, Niagara Falls Blvd. and Maple Rd. in Amherst, and 8214 Main St. in Clarence), and twelve more throughout the Rochester area; billgrays.com. Bill Gray’s features great hot dogs, burgers, chicken wings, ice cream, and more. Their kid’s meals, all under $5, feature kid favorites like Mac and Cheese, hamburgers, and chicken tenders, plus a side of fries or a fruit cup, as well as a beverage (including milk or juice). The atmosphere of the Clarence restaurant is family-friendly, with televisions tuned to the latest sports or Disney Channel shows, and there is also an arcade. Both locations are open seven days a week; check the website for times at each location.
Hucklebucket’s Family Grill and Sports Bar – 3047 Sheridan Dr. in Amherst; 716-835-5540 or www.hucklebuckets.com. A restaurant with an interesting concept: nearly all the menu items are served in buckets. The owner, Scott Weinstein, had a few specific criteria he wanted to meet at this venue: a fun atmosphere, family-friendly, big televisions for sports, reasonably priced food, and that it be locally owned. Menu items range from the Garbage Pail (fries and rings covered in chili, cheese, scallions, and more) to Pteradactyl Wings (fried turkey wings) to the Slop Bucket (a pound of pulled pork with mini onion rolls). There are also Happy Hour specials for adults, and fun for college age kids throughout the week. Hucklebucket’s is open seven days a week, with special hours for the dining area and the bar; check the website for exact hours.
Tully’s Good Times – two locations in the Amherst area (8070 Main St. in Clarence and 1459 Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst) and others throughout New York State; www.tullysgoodtimes.com. Tully’s features 70-plus televisions in each location, always tuned to the top games and sports shows. The décor is sports-fan-friendly, with sports cards adorning the tables and pictures and memorabilia adorning the walls. Tully’s is family-friendly, and there’s also a game room with old-school video games and pool tables. The items on the kid’s menu are under $5, with the exception of the 6 oz. Flat Iron Steak with fries. Both locations are open seven days a week; check the website for exact times.
