Traveling through southeastern Wisconsin this summer, I discovered one very important thing: the Friday night fish fry is a sacred Midwestern tradition! It’s true, especially in the Lake Geneva area, where you can trek up and down State Road 50 and see that just about every restaurant, pub, diner, cafe; and sports bar advertises a Friday night fish fry. The best part about these fish fests is the fact that they are usually economically priced and sometimes even “all-u-can eat.”
Here are a few of my favorite Friday night fish frys in and around the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin area:
Here’s the scuttlebutt on Scuttlebutts: it is a small, but mighty, lakefront eatery that specializes in breakfast but also delivers a fantastic lunch and dinner menu. And just recently, Scuttlebutts was voted Lake Geneva’s number one Friday fish fry featuring an all day affair with crunchy Icelandic cod, savory potato pancakes and more. Lunch is served from 11am to 4pm while the dinner hours are from 4pm to 10pm and include an all-u-can eat option priced at just $9.95. Due to its lakeside local, small size and immense popularity among tourists, plan at least a 45 minute wait to dine at Scuttlebutts. Scuttlebutts is located across from the lake at 831 Wrigley Drive in downtown Lake Geneva.
Just next door from Scuttlebutts sits a treasured Lake Geneva staple. Popeye’s is a favorite amongst visitors from all over the Midwest. A boisterous buccaneer’s theme brings in dozens of diners as Popeye’s is equipped to host a hundred people or more. Their menu is enormous as well and presents everything from burgers and chicken to pasta and steaks. But the all-u-can eat Friday fish fry at Popeye’s is especially delicious and is served family style for just $12.99 per person. The wait staff hands off platters of broiled and breaded fish complete with potato pancakes, applesauce and bottomless buckets of French fries.
Champs Sports Bar and Grill
Lake Geneva’s esteemed sports bar also puts out a fabulous Friday fish fry boasting deep fried Icelandic cod for $7.95, Lake Perch for $9.95 and lightly breaded Walleye for $8.95. Sides include: crispy French fries, coleslaw, applesauce and bread. And Champ’s also offers both fantail and coconut shrimp options priced just under $10.00 each. Champ’s Sports Bar and Grill is located at 747 Main Street in downtown Lake Geneva.
Foley’s Irish Woods Bar and Grill
Live music, a rustic atmosphere and a diverse menu make Foley’s a terrific choice on any night, but particularly on Fridays. Tasty Haddock fish fillets are lightly battered, gently fried and then dished up with malt vinegar, soup or salad, steak fries, Irish soda bread and sumptuous apple slices baked with cinnamon and brown sugar. Foley’s is located at W3905 State Road 50.
