No doubt New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks has been one of the biggest breakout fantasy football performers of the season. Seemingly from the season opener, Nicks became the Ginat’s go-to-guy in the passing game and helped fantasy football owners in all leagues with his high TD count along with his high receptions count. The guy became a star and was a sure fire top 5 WR option all season until last week when it was revealed that Nicks would miss 3 weeks with what is caleld compartment syndrome in his leg. Since the fantasy football playoff season is fast approaching, the timing couldnt be worse. Nicks left a gaping hole in lineups and to make matters worse, the New York Daily News reported today that there is a chance Nicks misses the rest of the season due to complications that can arise from such an issue. No doubt Nick’s owners are wondering what they can possibly do to minimize his absence and I am here to help with this.
For starter’s, there really is no way to totally replace what Nicks was giving his fantasy football owners. Short of making a trade, there is no one on the free agent radar that can replicate what Nicks can give you. There are some guys however that can help ease the loss and the very first place you should start is by running to your free agent wire to see if Vincent Jackson is avaiable. The San Diego wideout is expected to make his season debut Sunday for an offense that is far and away the most prolific in the NFL led by record setting QB Philip Rivers. We all saw how great Jackson was last season with Rivers and with Malcom Floyd and Patrick Crayton both injured at the wideout position (and TE Antonio Gates as well), there is a gaping hole to fill for catches which Jackson is more than capable of doing. Jackson is available in 32 percent of Yahoo leagues right now which tells me a lot of fantasy football owners have given up on their teams and moved on. Dont be one of those owners. If Jackson is there than you pick him right up and put him right into the lineup.
If Jackson is not on your league’s waiver wire, the next name to look at would be James Jones of Green Bay. Jones has moved ahead of Donald Driver in the Packers WR hierarchy and he seems to have the trust of QB Aaron Rodgers which does wonders for your fantasy football value. We all know the Packers love to throw the football and Jones has home run ability like Greg Jennings. He has upside and plays in the perfect offense right now.
Yet another name would be Emmanuel Sanders of Pittsburgh who has caught a TD two games in a row and has the athleticism to continue his ascent. The Steelers are not a huge passing team but those in TD heavy leagues should be interested.
Finally, the Rams’ Brandon Gibson has gotten more and more looks lately and has a good matchup against the Broncos this week. Use him for that game and if he excels, keep him around and see where it takes you.
So there you have it. You cant replace Nicks altogether but I think these guys can help keep you afloat as we see how his injury shakes out. Best of luck with this and hope for the best.
