Whenever Oprah Winfrey says something, people listen. In all truth Fat Witch Bakery in Chelsea Market (1) maybe didn’t even need the blessing of the Big O. Of course having that gold star at the top of the resume is always welcome but Fat Witch has been featured in all sorts of local and national fronts: CNN, NY 1, Food Network, Oxygen, Today Show, NYC TV, New York Observer, Money Magazine, Today Show, House Beautiful, Daily Candy, Macy’s Famous Chefs, New York Times, Time Out New York, and NPR are a few of the many names which scroll along the Fat Witch website. Maybe the greatest honor for the confectioner maker isn’t about Oprah at all because when you are making Oprah’s favorite brownie and a brownie many other guests consider top tier and you’re getting positive play from Health Magazine; that is truly esteemed company.
The wife and I were out the other day in Chelsea, enjoying some of those blessed days of early autumn (before it becomes cold fall) and we happened into Chelsea Market. The wife turned to me and asked me if I wanted to taste Oprah’s favorite brownie. I am a pretty big brownie connoisseur and I had the stomach for it so I welcomed the challenge.
My wife and I have eaten brownies all over this country. Not to say that we are “brownie experts” (we still make home baked brownies from whatever box is on sale) but still, we have eaten enough to know what we like. We have a pretty good idea of what passes for a good brownie and what doesn’t. Frankly I was a little upset that I hadn’t ever been introduced to this Fat Witch thing a lot sooner. The wife talked about it like she ate here all the time. But this is the comfort and familiarity which Oprah embodies. Rather than quibble over the holy matrimony vows of ‘what’s mine is yours’ I figured that there is no time like the present to amend this problem, so we bellied up to the bar.
I got the classic witch – it was good.
My wife got the caramel witch – it was really, really sweet. And good.
While I don’t know that I would go calling the brownies at Fat Witch the best in the world, they certainly took that Oprah endorsement for all it was worth. There is Witch related paraphernalia, t-shirts, coffee mugs, and on and on it goes. I wonder what the world will do when Oprah leaves the airwaves. I don’t know that the folks over at Fat Witch are really thinking too much about that. It appears to these eyes anyway, that the Fat Witch is just busy pillaging all the pocketbooks of the laypeople while their market is still en vogue. And so, with that, the Fat Witch just keeps getting fatter.
