The myth is you should feed a cold and starve a fever, but this is only a myth. A matter a fact feeding a cold actually can help it get better, but starving a fever can actually make a fever worse and you sicker. You should actually eat and drink as much fluids when you are sick to help provide your body with the most nutrients it needs to help support the immune system so it can fight of the virus or bacteria causing the cold and fever in the first place.
The myth feed a cold and starve a fever originated a very long time ago when people believed there were two different types of illnesses. One of the illnesses they believed caused people to get the chills so they thought the best thing to do would be to eat plenty of soups and drink plenty of fluids. The other types of illness caused people to become very warm and feverish so people thought the best thing to do was not eat warm food or drinks because this would make the fever higher. Truth is it is always best to drink plenty of fluids such as waters, orange juice, herbal teas and warm chicken and veggie broths when you are trying to fight off a cold and a fever. Plus you should always eat when you feel hunger because this is your body’s natural way of telling you it needs more nutrients to help keep it running properly.
So, yes feeding a cold could help speed up the recovery from one, but starving a fever can actually make it go up and make you sicker. The reason you have a cold and a high fever to begin with is because you came in contact with a virus or certain strained of bacteria that has caused the cold and the fever. Like I said the best way to heal a cold and fight a fever is to drink plenty of fluids and eat as much fruits, veggies and warm soups as possible. If your fever gets to high it is best to take herbal remedies and conventional medicine such as feverfew or Tylenol to help bring it down. If your cold is getting worse and your fever is getting higher the best thing to do is see your doctor because you could possibly need an antibiotic to help you fight off the infections faster. You can also try taking immune boosting herbs such as echinacea and goldenseal to help fight and ease the symptoms of a cold and bring down a fever, but these aren’t always guaranteed to work.
Feeding a cold and starving a fever is a myth so remember that next time you think about feeding your cold and starving your fever. To actually do what the myth says could potentially be dangerous. Always drink plenty of fluids and eat lots of fresh fruits, veggies and warm soups when you are sick to help fight off your cold and bring down your fever. I wish you all the best with feeling well soon.
