Today’s tough economic times are making the Ferndale City Council more cautious than usual about proposed employments contracts for its new fire and police chiefs. Mayor Craig Covey has also raised concerns about specific portions of the two contracts, which are expected to be hashed out over the next few weeks.
Police Chief Timothy Collins and Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan were both hired into probationary periods several months ago, after their predecessors took buyouts. Two-year contracts for each official have been proposed to the Ferndale City Council, but concerns about salary and cost of living payments, specifically, have resulted in a stalemate of sorts.
Mayor Covey has stated that he believes that the police chief’s proposed salary of around $99,000 is higher than that of police chiefs in surrounding areas. He is also concerned about the proposed amount of Collins’ quarterly cost of living payments, which are currently at around $200.
