Finding farm fresh foods in the winter is difficult. Many roadside stands have closed up and several of the farmers markets close up in late October. Here are four farmers markets that are open year round selling fresh vegetables, fruits, baked goods and meats.
Harrisburg’s Broad Street Market is located at 1233 North 3rd Street Harrisburg, PA 17102 and is open with limited vendors on Wednesday from 7am to 2pm, and with all vendors Thursday and Friday from 7am until 5pm and on Saturday from 7am until 4pm. It offers free lot parking Wednesday through Saturday and street parking is free on Saturdays. The Broad Street Market has been in operation continuously since 1860, which makes it the oldest market to be continuously operating in the United States. Currently, there are 40 vendors. If you are looking for farm fresh foods, be sure to look for Shady Nook Farm Market, located in the brick market building. Shady Nook offers a variety of home grown fruits and vegetables among other foods. There are also fresh meat and baked goods vendors.
Lemoyne’s West Shore Farmers Market is located at 900 Market Street Lemoyne, PA 17043. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, with varying hours. The cool thing about the West Shore Farmers Market is that the downstairs portion of the market houses the stalls of people selling goods and products, mainly edible or plant based, while the upstairs has a nice variety of shops. Several downstairs stalls sell fresh herbs, meats, baked goods and Pippin Run Farm’s stall sells fresh produce that is grown by them. Pippin Run Farm is open Fridays from 8am until 7pm and Saturday from 8am until 2pm.
Middletown’s Saturday’s Market is located at 3751 East Harrisburg Pike Middletown, PA 17057 and is open Saturday’s outside from 4am until 4pm and inside from 8am until 4pm. The outdoor market is also open Sunday from 7am until 3pm. This market is huge and has more than 300 vendors. There are multiple vendors that offer fresh or home grown fruits, vegetables and meats. Make sure to get there early and try to get the best looking fruits and vegetables. This market gets a lot of shoppers and items tend to go very quickly. Usually by the end of the day, the best fresh foods vendors have all but run out of food!
York’s Central Market is located at 34 W Philadelphia Street York, PA. This is right in the middle of downtown York. The market is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 6am until 2pm. There is a garage located near the market that is free during market hours on Saturdays, or you can use the metered street parking. There are four main fruit and vegetable stands, one of which is organic. There are three fresh meat stands that sell a large variety of cuts and types of meat at the market.
Any of these four markets are well worth the trip to go find those farm fresh foods you have been craving.
