I am not a big country music fan, so I don’t watch CMT (Country Music Television). But one night three years ago, surfing through cable channels, I stumbled into CMT’s hit show, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team.
At first, the show attracted my attention with all the cute cheerleaders dancing in skimpy outfits. But as I continued watching, I realized that this reality TV show is actually good! Not only is it entertaining, it’s full of substance and less of drama. With a fun cast of girls and judges, great workout and dance routines and a focus on positive image for young women, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team is one of the best reality TV shows that has entered the networks!
I know it’s hard to believe. What? Cheerleaders with substance? But here are five reasons why you should watch the show.
Reason 1: The girls
This reason is no surprise. Of course the cheerleaders are genetically blessed, but the show also shows us who they are as individuals. Some of them moved to Dallas from far away to achieve their dream of becoming a cowboys cheerleader; some of them were not dancers to start with and had to work so much harder than others.
Getting to know the girls made them more human and less “cheerleader”. It’s really comforting to see that even such beautiful people have struggles.
Reason 2: Fun dance routines
No wonder Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders is a world-class team! The routines are so much fun to watch! Their choreography is energetic and entertaining. Sometimes, watching these girls dance makes me want to get on the dance floor too!
Reason 3: Workout tips and motivation
To keep fit, these cheerleaders work out with some gruesome routines that are obviously effective. Seeing these toned and athletic girls work so hard motivates me to hit the gym.
Reason 4: Cool cast
I love seeing the way Kelli Finglass, director of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, operates the recruiting process. She is poised and authoritative, yet caring and easy to talk to.
Also, physical trainer Jay Johnson has such a strong personality. He is always creating fun activities and dynamic workouts for the girls. And the way he motivates them is really touching.
Last but not least, dance consultant Kitty Carter has quite a personality! She is always harping on the girls, picking on their every mistake. But through her brutal honesty and tough critique, she pushes the girls to perform at their best.
Reason 5: Finally! Good reality TV!
I never knew that becoming a Cowboys Cheerleader requires multiple rounds of audition, group interviews and a summer-long training camp. In addition to that, they need to look good and assume friendly attitude at all times. Besides cheerleading, they are also ambassadors for the Cowboys brand and their corporate sponsors.
Instead of focusing on drama, the show focuses on how these girls are made to be role models for other young women. It’s wonderful to finally see girls with wholesome instead of trashy images on a reality TV show.
Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team has just started its fifth season on CMT. Obviously, the show is successful and I am so glad to see it returning for another season! With so much drama on reality television these days, it’s refreshing to watch something that actually makes me feel good.
